Circa: 1950 Condition: Used Type: Softcover Publisher: State Historical Society of Iowa
This is the June, 1950 issue of THE PALIMPSEST, monthly publication of the State Historical Society of Iowa, Iowa City.
This issue was a special edition featuring articles on the famous Amana Colonies in eastern Iowa. It's a reprint of the May, 1936 issue which was written by Bertha M. H. Shambaugh and digested information from her book about the area. A brief biography is featured at the beginning of the issue.
The site for the colonies was chosen by their leader, Christian Metz and first settled in 1854. The group was officially named the Community of True Inspiration and lived in a modified, cooperative capitalism, with wages, profits and private ownership, in which communism functions as an overtone.
The Seven Colonies are described in minute detail here, as well as shown in a number of wonderful vintage photos. A map inside the back cover shows the colonies' locations, as well as landmarks within the settlement.
This issue is in Very Good condition with no defects beyond very light edge wear on the soft covers and a small area on the front where someone scribbled a bit. It's a great glimpse at some fascinating incidents in Iowa's history! (1366)
