Manufacturer: American Paperweight Company Col. Albert A. Pope, known as the "Father of bicycles" - not for inventing them but for mass-marketing them under the brand name Columbia through Pope Manufacturing. He was also a pioneer in the improvement of roads, as the paperweight proclaims, mainly to improve the market for his bicycles. The paperweight is made by American Paperweight Company of Pittsburgh, PA, probably between 1892 and 1909, when Col. Pope passed away, following the financial failure of his automobile company, Pope Motor Carriage Company. Good, clearly reproduced photograph of Pope, transfer-fired on back. Excellent gift for the antique bicycle enthusiast.
