FAMILY ALBUM/TIN PICTURE
Next to the family Bible, the album was considered a record of one’s family. This album is written inside, not too legibly, J. S. Lamry – Fort Payne, Alabama. Some of the pictures were taken by B.B. Howard, Photographer from that town. Others are from Texas, and other southern towns.
One of the pictures is a tin – I am holding it. Others are a reddish brownish color and due to the fragility of the album, I hesitate to remove them from their holders. There are a total of 31 photos in the album.
The cover is a plastic hard cover material, but shows its age. The closing mechanism to lock the metal clasp together is missing. The rear cloth binding is worn and beginning to tear. The front has a design of two lilies with head drawings of two young ladies – perhaps angels. The outside area has a silver colored greek design (some of the color is worn)
What is more important is the history of the photos. In earlier days, taking pictures was a special occasion, as evidenced by the period outfits. Little girls are in the finest dresses and young men are dressed in their best knickers. The men and women are posed in front of artificial scenery depicting elegance. Some of the actual "home" photos, depict the poverty of the era. This was a time when family values were considered of utmost importance, personal relationships were revered, and human dignity was a guideline for the treatment of one another. This book covers several generations, as evidenced by the styles |
