Salt and Pepper Shakers, Master Salt Cellars and Dips

The screw-top salt shaker was invented by John Mason in 1858. Around 1871 when salt became more refined, some ceramic shakers were molded with perforated tops. An innovation of the early 1800s, the master salt with its miniature silver spoon was placed on the table by the host to be passed from person to person. Smaller individual salts were a part of each place setting to put one’s salt in

T-8169

Glass Master Open Salt Cellar Glass Master Salt Cellar. This master open salt cellar measures 1-3/4” tall with a 2-1/2” opening and features a diamond facet cut pattern on the outside. Before salt became refined, processed, and free flowing as we know it today, it was necessary to serve it in a salt cellar. An innovation of the early 1800s, the master salt with its miniature silver spoon was placed on the table by the host to be passed from person to person. Smaller individual salts were a part of each place setting to put one’s salt in.

Salt cellar has a chip and a few nicks on the inside rim from use. These flaws do not deter this open master salt from its beauty and it still makes it extremely collectible.

The pattern is 8 wide ribbed octagon rising to top. These shakers are in mint condition except that one is missing its stopper. The oxidation on the salt stopper made it impossible to salvage. H. P. Sinclaire Pressed Salt Shaker H. P. Sinclaire & Co. Vintage Pressed Salt or Pepper Shaker. This vintage crystal pressed glass shaker measure 1-3/4” with a tin plated brass cap and a dainty hoop handle. It has a diamond quilted or diamond point pattern with trademark “S” embossed in a circle wreath and a number 5 on the bottom which our research identifies as the H. P. Sinclair & Co. of Corning, NY.

According to Ralph & Terry Kovel’s Antique & Collectibles P.L. 2003, Sinclaire was only in business between 1905 and 1929 and only a small percentage of Sinclaire glass is marked with the S in a wreath. Sinclaire was associated with T. G. Hawkes before opening his own cutting shop after the turn of the 20th century. Like Hawkes, he bought most of his blanks from Steuben. This vintage piece is in good condition for its age

T-8151

Cobalt Glass Shakers with Chrome Liners Cobalt Glass Salt and Pepper Shakers with Chrome Liners. This salt and pepper shaker set in cobalt blue glass stand 2-1/2” tall each. Each shaker has a chrome filigree motif liner or insert that goes over the cobalt glass vessel. One of the chrome pieces has a screwed red Bakelite finial on the top. Unfortunately the other one does not. It probably got lost over the years, and the top of it has some oxidation from the salt. Both cobalt shakers have an incised marked on the glass bottom with “Japan”. Shakers are both in good condition for their age and use.
