HAND MADE WOVEN BASKET - PAPAGO
Beautiful hand made basket that I am pretty sure is Papago. The basket is 4 1/2 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches wide. The coiled grass is tightly woven around the basket and almost a herringbone design radiating from the center of the bottom of the basket. There are two dark brown bands in the center of the basket.

Lovely Nantucket Basket measureing 9 inches across inside lip and stands 5 inches tall. It is signed 'THR' on the bottom and is in as new condition.
Nantucket Lightship Baskets originated in the nineteenth century on Nantucket Island’s famous lightships. These floating lighthouses were used to warn mariners away from dangerous shoals. Captain and crew took to basketweaving to pass the time on board. Time weighed so heavily, in fact, that the style they evolved for these baskets was a marvel of intricacy.
By the beginning of the twentieth century, Nantucket baskets had become a romantic keepsake among tourists yachting near the Island. Today, both antique and contemporary versions are highly sought after by collectors.
