MAFFEI BOOK DE GLI ANFITEATRI 1728 in VERONA VENICE -
This rare book was printed in 1728 in Verona, Republic of Venice by Alberto Tumermani. It is titled DE GLI ANFITEATRI E SINGOLARMENTE DEL VERONESE LIBRI DUE. It is a study of the Verona Amphitheater written by Francesco Scipione, Marquis di Maffei (1675-1755), an Italian scholar, archaeologist and writer. It has 348 pages plus index and all its original illustrations, many of them foldout. The edges of the pages are uncut and not of uniform size. On the title page is what appears to be an old quill ink signature, probably of the original owner (see photo). The hand bound cover appears to be very old hard paper with the titled hand written in ink on the spine. The surface is rough and worn with flaking and all the edges are bumped in. The pages are clean and in excellent condition, even though the edges are wavy and the binding is loose. |

1606 BOOK DE RERUM INVENTORIBUS by POLYDORE VERGIL -
Polydore Vergil (1470-1555) was a Renaissance humanist scholar, historian and man of letters. This Antiquarian Book is a 1606 Latin Edition of Polydore Vergils De Rerum Inventoribus (On Discovery). It includes his eight books on the Origin of All Things (first published in 1499 and expanded in1521). It covers most scientific topics to include methods of telling time, the mathematics, medicine, literature, agriculture, sports, relationships, religion and the philosophies among others. There is an addendum by C. PLINII and ALEXANDRI SARDI. It measures about 6 ½ by 4 ½ inches and is bound in vellum (see photos for condition). There are about ten areas where the vertical edges of the pages are stained with what looks like ink (photo) and many pages where the reader ticked off each line with what looks like a feather pen (photo) but no wording was affected. The eight books total 502 pages, the index totals 85 pages and the addendum totals 94 pages. A later owner had his name stamped vertically onto the title page to read V ENGELSHOFEN 1709. At the top of the title page is an inscription or signature (photo) penned in ink, but I do not know what it says. The title page reads POLYDORI VERGILII URBINATIS DE RERUM INVENTORIBUS LIBRI OCTO. EJUSDEM IN ORATIONEM DOMINICAM COMMENTATIOLUM. NOVA EDITIO, IN QUAPRATER COROLLARIA MARGINI FIVE OR LIBRI APPOFITA, INDEX QUOG LOCUPLETIFIMUS, PRIORI MULTO CAFTIGATIOR, LECTORI EXHIBETUR. It continues ACCESSERUNT C.PLINII, ALEXANDRI SARDI, ALIORUMQUE DE EADEM MATERIA COLLECTANEA, FEQUENTI PAGELLA CONFIGNATA (then the publishers stamp) ARGENTORATI SUMPTIBUS LAZARI ZETZNERI BIBLIOP M.DC.VI. There is some printing on the cover at the top of the spine that is hard to make out (photo). The author is best know for his extensive work on the history of England during the Tudor period and knew Popes Alexander VI & Leo X, Kings Henry VII & VIII and Catherine de Medici. |
