This unbelievably fine whitework is from the mid 19th Century. There are 26 inches (67cm) of finished embroidery and 5½ (14 cm) inches of blue printed pattern on a black kind of thin oil-cloth backing. One motif is just being started and you see the ground stitching. The white cotton strip is age-dingy and some of the black surface of the backing has come off on to the back side of the strip. There are no holes or splits and the textile is strong. The width of the strip is 2 6/8 inches (7 cm) and the width of the embroidery is 7/8th (20cm). This interesting piece (sometimes called Broderie Anglaise) would be a fine addition to a private or museum collection.
