Circa: 1884-1901 Condition: used Manufacturer: Stanley
This is a nice clean, Type 1, Duplex Rabbet Plane marked "STANLEY NO. 78 MADE IN U.S.A." on one side of the main casting, and "PAT. JAN.30.83 PAT. OCT.23.83" on the other side. This plane is basically the original 1st production model of the No. 78. The plane main casting, and adjustable depth stop, and fence are in good+ condition with about 70% of the original black Japanning intact overall, most of the wear is on the handle area. This plane is complete with a side fence, and adjustable depth stop, adjustable spur, (in the same area as the depth stop), and a good sharp cutter marked "PAT'D NOV. 18 1884". The cutter is slightly different than the later model, with a narrower slot that the screw goes through, and there is no cutter depth adjustment by design on this model. The bare metal surfaces are clean, no cracks, a little wear noted, a few minor scratches, mostly just tiny little dings and scratches, good 1.5" wide, sharp cutter, and is in ready to use condition! The fence can be used on either right or left side, and the cutter can be used in the front or back position, just like the newer Stanley model No. 78. A real nice, early woodworking tool overall, from the 1930's-50's era. |
