Circa: Late 1800's-Early 1900's Condition: Good++ Manufacturer: Peck, Stow, & Wilcox Co. U.S.A.
This is a very nice, clean, late 1800's antique ratchet hand brace, and it has a 10" swing. This model was originally patented on FEB.10.1884 as we have sold others with the patent date on them, but this one is a bit newer, and doesn't have the patent date mark on it. It is marked "P.S.&W. CO.NO. 1002" basically a abbreviated name used by (PECK, STOW, & WILCOX) and also has a unique circular logo marked inside the circle "P.S. & W TOOLS GUARENTEED" with another circle that has a fist holding a tool handle. This model has the flip lever ratchet control system, flip one or the other down to engage ratchet for that given direction, or both down to lock. The ratchet system and chuck is in very good condition with nice heavy duty, spring loaded jaw inserts, the knurled part of the chuck or the chuck sleeve is steel with very little wear, very good working ratchet system as well. The head turns smoothly, capped with a nice solid rosewood handle, and the crank handle matches it but is slightly darker wood, both in nice solid condition and appearence. We do note a very small chip off the head handle at the steel flange plate, but very solid, not cracked The condition is very good overall, with little wear overall. Very clean, no rust, some very minor pitting, mostly on the steel arms, very nice ball bearing thrust plate at the head, spins very freely. In really good working condition overall. A quality made brace, still in great shape, nice looking too!
