Circa: early 1900's Condition: Good++ Manufacturer: Snell Mfg. Co. Fiskdale Mass. U.S.A.
This is a unique set of brace auger bits that comes with a fitted case that has a unique design for holding the auger bits in place. The case is made of oak and has a spring coil that holds the auger bit in place very well. The case most likely originally has a Pugh set in it. The oak case also have the strong lap jointed corners on both the bottom and the top of the hardwood box/case. The auger bits are all marked "SNELL", some also have the Fiskdale plant location on them, and others are marked "SNELL MFG. CO.", basically they are all made by the same manufacturer. Most are similar to the Irwin type auger design, with a more open spiral, and 4 of them are much like Russell Jennings auger bit in the spiral twist form and they do have the fine threaded lead screws at the tip, but the spurs are different from most any other brand in their day. There is a double cutting edge on all 13 size from 4-16/16" in 16ths graduations. All the bits are clean, rust free, sharp and useable, no damage, a few have some minor wear on the spur, not serious, will cut just fine, a few have very minor pitting on them, no rust. The box/storage case is in nice clean condition, good hinges and latch works fine, nice smooth finish on the exterior, we note a few nails added on the top over the years, a good solid box with good strong box/lap jointed corners! The box is 11.2" long x 6.0"x 3" high. A nice cabinet makers set of brace type auger bits with the tapered chuck end to fit in your brace, or we have lots of good hand braces to choose from, sold seperately. Snell Mfg. Co. Auger bits were made in Fiskdale Mass. U.S.A. between 1870 to 1905. It appears they also has a plant in Sturbridge Mass. during some part of that time, but we don't know if they made auger bits there.
