Shaving mugs were very popular from the 1880's-1920's. Men went to the local barbership for a shave and a haircut, (2 bits!). Then, around WW1, companies like Gilette, came out with mass produced razors and men began shaving themselves at home. Most mugs either had the man's last name on them, his fraternal order, his occupation, or were decorative in nature. Companies that produced the porcelain mugs were Germany, Austria and France. Japan seems to have produced mainly ceramic mugs. The decorative mugs I have listed and sold include include landscape scenes, automobiles, ships, florals, and animals.

First is an awesome vintage shaving brush contained in a screw top container. Container reads: Vulcanized in Rubber, Better Brushes, Palmer, Mass., (note the old state abbreviation on it). The brush does not appear to have ever been used, and the container is 3 tall. On the metal bottom of brush it reads: Sterlized, N.Y. USA, and an E within a diamond symbol. Next is a nifty metal matchsafe; one side of it reads McClelland Barclay, top has a leaf symbol. Next is a silverplate cup with incised mark 1881, Rogers, R in a wreath symbol, and P in a wreath symbol on other side or Rogers name; makes a great shaving mug and is 2.5 tall x 2.5 wide. Next is a 6.5 inch Old Spice After Shave Bottle/flask. It has a paper label on bottom; it dates to 1990, (not vintage).
