Eddie Doucette’s Favorite Recipes – Vintage Cook Booklet Courtesy of the Midwest Super Mart of Evanston, Illinois, this charming cook booklet contains some wonderful recipes. It unfortunately does not include a date but I estimate it as being circa late 1950s to early 1960s. It looks like a self-published booklet (an early zine) and does not include pictures. Some of the recipes include Butterscotch Meringue Apple Pie, Bride’s Cake, Ham Balls Casserole Bavarian, Joe Froggers (a spice cookie), Spicy Chicken a la Chinese, Sour Cream Biscuits, Short Ribs That Are Different (Sweet and Sour Like), Marshmacnut Salad, Lemon Barbecue Sauce, Krazy Kake with Fluffy Pink Peppermint Frosting, Forgotten Torte, and more. Good condition. 36 pages.

This 9-inch tall cook book has a plastic binding at the top so that it can stand on your counter like an easel – easy to read! The book is filled with recipes from Appetizers to Vegetables and the pages are very full of recipes in double columns, since there aren’t many illustrations. Good home-cooking recipes include: Horseradish Bacon Dip, Angel Food Doughnuts, Dutch Apple Cake, Mystery Cake, Date-Scotch Picnic Loaf, Potato Cake, Applets, Cashew Nut Casserole (with Beef), Coconut Strawberry Cookies, Pineapple Crunchies, Cherry Pudding, Persimmon Pudding, New England Pumpkin Pudding, Mother’s Suet Pudding, Russian Steak, Spamburgers, Apple Meat Balls, Syrian Stew, Baked Salmon Spanish, Eggnog Pie, Zwieback Pie, Pineapple Lemon Pie, Cinnamon Candy Salad, 24-Hour Salad, Eggplant Souffle, Italian Plum Marmalade, Green Tomato Relish, and Watermelon Rind Pickles. 88 pages, but there are 5 to 8 recipes on most pages. Vintage hardcover booklet contains household advice, food history from colonial times, the story of Mondamin the Legend of Corn, and recipes such as: Sally Lunn, Shirred Eggs with Crumbs, Codfish Omelet, Corned Beef Hash Au Gratin, Salmon Bisque, Bread and Raisin Balls, Lemon Nutmeg Sauce, Mock Scallops, Steamed Brown Bread, Butterscotch Bread Squares, Caramel Tapioca, Scotch Cup Cakes, Orange Ice, Lobster Savory Canapes, Carrot and Rice Soup, Beef Steak and Kidney Pie, Spanish Casserole, Jellied Caramel Cream, Raisin Nut Omelet, Scotch Scones, Jelly Layer Cake, Steamed Graham Cracker or Cake Crumb Pudding, Vanilla or Chocolate Blanc Mange, Jellied Chicken Cream Salad, Christmas Pudding, Salt Water Taffy, and much more, including a six-page section on caring for linens, an ad for LINIT laundry starch, and instructions on making mayonnaise with Mazola oil. The author stresses the use of Mazola oil and Karo syrup, which is not surprising, considering that the publisher is the Corn Products Refining Co. Small hardcover booklet measures 6.75 inches high and is in good condition with normal wear that can be expected for its age. A thoroughly delightful glimpse of our past.

Aunt Sammy’s Radio Recipes – 1976 Cook Booklet Selections from Aunt Sammy’s Radio Recipes and USDA Favorites (1976) – In 1926, the USDA Bureau of Home Economics and the Radio Service created the character of Aunt Sammy, who was said to be the wife of Uncle Sam. Menus and recipes were the highlights of Aunt Sammy’s radio show, which faded out after the Great Depression in 1934. Booklet contains recipes from the 1920s as well as some from the 1970s. Vintage booklet contains meat charts, roasting and broiling timetables, instructions for various ways of cooking meat, and recipes such as: Beef Cabbage Rolls, Pickle Pot Roast, Veal Stew with Pepper Biscuits, Beef Heart Casserole, Live a la Stroganoff, Cheese-Stuffed Pork Chops, Raisin-Rice Lamb Chops, Corned Beef Cones, Bacon-Cheese Filling, Double Crust Pork Pie, Frankfurter Surprise, many more meat recipes and some desserts that use lard as shortening (use your own judgment, folks, you may want to be kind to your arteries): Chocolate Confetti Pie, Pineapple-Peach Pie, Cranberry Coffee Cake, Apple-Plum Dumplings, and more. Softcover booklet measures 6.75 inches high and is in good condition with some water-induced wrinkling on the back cover and a rip in the front cover near the stapled edge.

Cookies, beverages, appetizers, main dishes, turkey, turkey leftovers, desserts. The recipes include Coffee Bon-Bons, English Matrimonials, Caramel Crisps, Finnish Christmas Rolls, Turkey Waffle Stack-Ups, Orange Savarin, Holiday Fig Delight, Mincemeat Parfaits, and more. Pictures of electric appliances of the day (as suggested gifts). Nicely illustrated ideas for decorating your house with outdoor lights. 31 pages. Very good condition.
