Measuring approxiamtely 86" by 66", this gem dates back to the 1920s to the 40s. I was recently contacted by a collector who told me that this was more than likely an Amish quilt. I'm not an expert, so I cannot gurarantee its exact origin, but I can say that I purchased this from an established estate years ago from the heirs of the original owner.
The quilt is wonderfully hand quilted by someone who was obviously very skilled at the craft. The stitches are close together and the pattern is quite nice. The pattern, I've been told, is referred to as "Drunkard's Path". It's got an off white background with a wonderful red and yellow design forming a very striking look. The red travels diagonally one way while the subtle yellow path crosses over the opposite direction. Alternating also on the great spread is a checkerboard type material.
The colors are gorgeous and bright, yet subtle enough to decorate with antiques or contemporary decor. The backing is off white like the front, and the entire piece is hand quilted...no machine work has been utilized!
In excellent condition, the quilt is not torn or dryrotted in the least. It is strong and in very nice condition, and though it has some slight and very subtle age spots, they are so faint that they are nearly unnoticeable and do not detract from its charm. There are virtually no worn parts either, though I found a very small place on a yellow section that appears to have very minor damage...I've taken a picture to illustrate the point and feel that it would be easily repaired or left alone. One more thing...the thin red border of the quilt is a bit faded and has some spots that need tacking back up. Again, VERY MINOR...I just don't want any unpleasant surprises for the successful bidder! Sure to appeal to the pickiest collector, bid early on this unique decorative collectible!!<
This was one of the first quilts I've ever owned and one of my favorites! I have had it since about 1985 and had it professionally laundered 3 times to remove surface dust over the years. I have NEVER washed it in a machine or by myself...it has ONLY been taken care of by specialists in antique quilts. Only displayed, this piece hs NEVER been jumped on or abused by anyone since I've owned it. When my son was born, I had it on a quilt hanger in his room for display. It's nicely sized to go over a double or queen sized bed, and would be great in a guest room or on a wall of a cabin or in your home! Definitely used and enjoyed, but NOT abused |
