Measuring about 10 1/8" in diameter, this superb plate by Royal Doulton has been in my colleciton for many years. I am unsure of its age and upon research on the internet, I could only find 2 similar plates offered anywhere. One identical plate sold for $350 in October of 2004, and the other was over $200.
The plate has a splendid scalloped border and a colorful decal scene on the front entitled "Plymouth Hoe". The back is stamped with the appropriate Doulton Hallmarks with the green stamp "ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND" and number 12 above it, and an additional lion and crown stamp with a tree and landscape. The backstamp is interesting as there are two . The usual Royal Doulton stamp and a further Doulton stamp with the words " Historic England D 5940 Regd in Australia . " Even the Australian backstamp has a small tree and a distant castle .
The scene is of Sir Francis Drake who is bowling at Plymouth Hoe. The colors are vibrant and quite lovely. The plate is perfect with no damage or repair. An awesome display piece to add to your Royal Doulton collection! |
