This is superb! I purchased this years ago from the great granddaughter of the original painter of this piece. The porcelain lidded dish was made by Haviland (in France) but sold as a black to porcelain and china painters. It's stamped CFH on the bottom and also has a cursive "L" incised into it.
The artist signed this M.C.P. Watson 1885.
The painting is superb. One side has pink flowers, each flower with realistic and beautifully detailed, I believe they are dogwoods. One the other side is another lovely flower with a butterfly in amazing detail.
Perhaps the coolest thing about this is that the artist painted ants on the lid! A bit of whimsy, perhaps to indicate that this was meant to house sugar and the ants would be trying to get to the sweetness!
The sugar container has two little handles and a fitted lid. It is in impeccable condition, authentic and Victorian and like new! Not a nick or a chip or a hairline or a repair. Rare indeed! |
