Lovely heavy 1892 to 1893 Chicago World's Fair souvenir spoon. Wonderful design of two globes make up the end. Stamped on the back "STERLING" and it has the hallmark of a "W" in a circle as well as the seller's hallmark "O.D. Peacock" or it may be "C.D." The W is the Frank Whiting hallmark.
According to the internet: "The Frank M. Whiting & Co. was founded in 1878 in North Attleboro, Massachusetts by the son of William Whiting, the founder of the Whiting Manufacturing Co. In 1897 the company was incorporated and later was purchased by the Ellmore Silver Company of Meriden, CT. Their line included sterling silver flatware, hollowware, novelties, souvenir spoons, and baby goods."
Measures about 5 3/4" long. Engraved "Idelle" in the bowl and again on the back. Wonderful Columbian Exposition souvenir. Also has a "1492" and a "1892" in a raised design on the back. Superb Art Nouveau period piece.
Excellent condition. No damage or repair. Sold as found, unpolished, nice patina. |
