This wonderful charm is a miniature figural, hand carved of a walrus of ivory, possibly true walrus ivory. Measuring about 3/4" by 5/8", the aged solid piece is flat on the back and detailed on the front. His nose, eyes, and feet have hand painted accents.
At one time, the walrus were actively hunted by Inuit Eskimos, but demand for carved ivory from their tusks has lessened in the last few decades, and hunting is now less intense.
This walrus shows nice details complete with tusk and facial details. It's smooth and shiny and has a loop at the top to hang from a chain or charm bracelet. In excellent condition, it's free from damage or repair and is a fine diminutive sculpture. |
