From my own collection comes this somewhat rare Victorian poetry book by Samel Lover...what an appropriate name for an author of a book like this!
The book was initially published in 1891 and wsa published by J.B. Lippincott Company of Philadelphia. It has illustrative drawings by William (WM) Magrath. Also occasioanlly listed as "The Low Backed Car".
The book is in amazingly well preserved condition with a brown leatherette padded cover with embossed raised leaves, the leaf pattern a splendid design typical of fine Victoriana. It has gold gilt for the title "The Low Back'd Car", and the edges of each page has gold leaf as well.
The book has 12 illustrations, the original drawings engraved on wood by Chas (Charles) H. Reed. The 12 illustrations are each full page Typogravures.
The pages are in nice cndition with minimal if any foxing. The cover is also nicely preserved with some very minimal wear on the corners near the binding. The ver back inside of the cover has a small tear where teh edge of the page stuck to it...it's actually all there. In pen is a small written note that says this was purchased Feb 18th 1963 from the Lathrop home. Some minimal staining on some of the beginning and ending pages, but overall a great Victorian book worthy to be displayed with any collection of fine antique books! |
