This lovely bracelet, circa 1870s, truly embodies the spirit of the Victorian Aesthetic Movement. With its detailed hand etched or chased design and solid craftsmanship, one can see the Asian Oriental influence so popular in its time. The bangle measures about 7 1/4 in circumference (outside measurement..inside is more like 6 7/8) and is a tad shy of 3/4 wide. The edge is squared off rather than rounded, another indication from what is also known as the Eastlake era of Victoriana. I have a 6 wrist and it fits fine with plenty of room to spare...I'd say this fits a small to medium woman's frame.
The bracelet is stamped on the inside 800, which was more common than sterling silver in much of the jewelry I've found from Europe. Its hand carved design is quite lovely with flowers, leaves, and geometric arches and decoration. It has a nice secure clasp and a safety chain still intact.
The bracelet is in fair condition, with a lovely patina and original mechanisms and design. It does show some wear with dents and dings evident of someone who enjoyed wearing it often. Despite these dings (I've tried to illustrate the damage), it still wears nicely as it is and could possibly be restored if desired by a competent jewelry (I haven't taken it to anyone yet, so I do not guarantee that YOUR jeweler can repair it). Authentic and complete, this is a lovely piece. Bid accordingly to its shortcomings, and good luck...it would make a nice addition to any collection. |
