This is a dynamite miniature Made in Japan Toby Mug. It's a fabulous figural measuring approximately 2" high. I'm not sure of its exact age, but I'd guess 1940s or so.
The mug appears to be a rendition of Benjamin Franklin. It's a nice likeness with colorful details including his famous rectangular spectacles. The glaze has a glossy finish and the mark "MADE IN JAPAN" is printed in black ink on the bottom.
As a stateman, Ben Franklin was the only person who signed all four of these key documents in American history: the Declaration of Independence, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Treaty of Paris making peace with Britain, and the Constitution of the United States. Franklin's services as a diplomat in France helped greatly in winning the Revolutionary War.

Many historians consider him the ablest and most successful diplomat that America has ever sent abroad. Don't you just have to have this killer vintage likeness?? And the guy could invent stuff too!
I'd call this mug near mint, as it has a nick on the inside of the lip. It is not noticeable at all...in fact I didn't even see it til just now...you have to look at it from above as from the side, it's invisible. Otherwise, it's perfect and free of damage or repair and ready to add to your collection! |
