Wonderful pipe from either Austria or Germany. Perhaps considered a piece from the black forest...I am not sure. Measures about 13 1/2" at its longest when assembled, this European pipe looks to date back to the early 1900s or so. Again, I am only estimating...it sure feels like late Victorian to me. It has a long natural wooden branch-like piece with a curved mouthpiece and a porcelain connector and bowl. The white bowl has a lithographed or transferware design of a German or Austrian cityscape in lovely hues of orange, pink, blue and brown with "ANDENKEN AN WEIN" and "RATHBAU" across the bottom. A metal lid covers the top. The pipe is a functional piece, most likely, though I've only used it as a display piece. It comes apart, as it is supposed to, though it doesn't stay together without tightly putting it together. A metal lip between the wooden section and the first porcealin piece is loose, but otherwose, the piece is in nice condition with no cracks or repair to the porcelain and no damage or fading to the scene. A splendid piece for the collector of fine Pipes or souvenir memorabilia. |
