JER823 Howells, W.D. "The Rise of Silas Lapham". Boston: Ticknor and Company, 1885. First edition. Perfect "sojourner" as last word on p, 176. It is very good overall. It is bound in medium green cloth, with gold and black lettering/designs on the front and spine. These are bright and shiny. The end papers are tan and gray. The top and bottom of the spine are lightly frayed and there is very minor shelf wear to the bottom. A former owner’s pen and ink signature and date is on the front flyleaf. It is an attractive first edition copy of Howell’s account of the fall and redemption of an American businessman. Howell’s masterpiece and an American classic. Pre-page before introduction is a compilation like ad highlighting Mr. Howell’s Novels, comedies and plays. All pages are perfectly intact and spine is in excellent condition. Story itself is 515 pages long; page size is 7-3/8" x 4-5/8" and cover is 7-3/4" x 5". Copyright page says: Copyright 1884, By William B. Howells, All Rights Reserved, University Press, John Wilson and Son, Cambridge.

KEP332 This is a wonderful hardcover book, 1918 dated and apparently the only printing by James H. Snowden. It is called CAN WE BELIEVE IN IMMORTALITY. <p> This was printed by The Macmillan Company in New York. The pages are those old wonderful pages that are all oddly cut at the end as with vintage books. The author James H. Snowden D.D., L.L.D. was the author of The World A Spiritual System: An Outline of Metaphysics and The Basal Beliefs of Christianity and The Psychology of Religion and many many more. The pages are bound with string and it is in great shape with no tears. The bottom edge has a little wear, but such a wonderful classic edition.This book discusses the questions of immortality in the light of the crisis that is now so severly trying our fundamental faith as written in 1918.
