C.1900. This is a really unusual piece. The two young men look like they are having some fun with the camera, but hard to figure out the event. They are holding a homemade sign that appears to say, "By The Sad Sea Waves.

" In the background is part of a butcher’s sign that is "…RICK BROS, CHOICE MEATS." Perhaps "Broderick Bros." The huge umbrella was printed on the outside, but you can read it through the fabric (in a mirror). We can make out "BESSE RICHEY CLOTHING, HATTERS, NEW HAVEN." So this must have been in Conn. The fellow on the right is wearing a long white coat and over that is what looks like a Civil War tunic with crossed saber insignia. Quite a pair. Photographer: Ettlin’s, New York. Slightly oversized at 5 1/4 x 7 1/4.
Condition is excellent. You can see the image detail in the close ups. Some moderate soiling to image and card mount. Very little wear to mount.
