This is a sturdy little solid oak box with its original solid brass handle. Fine, tight dovetailing. Looks to be Circa 1890-1900. Size: 9 1/2" wide x 8 1/4" deep x 10 1/2" high to top of handle.
Were not positive what it was for. One theory based on the very thin slots is that it held glass photography plates or magic lantern slides. There are old handwritten numbers running down the left side of the slots.
The hinges on the door are slightly loose, but could likely be tightened up. It is exactly as it came out of a very old estate outside Atlanta. We have not done anything to it. It should turn out beautifully with a good clean and polish. Whether you collect boxes or lantern slides or photography plates, this is a nifty item to add to your collection.
