This is a very unusual, beautifully made loving cup made of leather with a copper liner and sterling silver rim. The plaque on the front reads:
Indian Harbor Yacht Club Tennis, Fall Tournament 1909 Mens Doubles Won By (no name engraved)
There is a yacht club by this name in Greenwich, Connecticut, so we suspect it is from there. In addition, the maker was Black, Starr & Frost, a high-end jeweler in nearby New York City.
Size: 7 1/2" tall 5 1/2" diameter 10" wide
Condition is very good. The heavy leather has dried out quite a bit but is still very sound and the stitching is still tight. The flash in the photos overstates the dryness. The plaque is still firmly attached. Not sure if the plaque is sterling or silver plate, but it is very nicely engraved. The trophy displays beautifully.
Sterling markings: Black, Starr & Frost Sterling AY 450
This is a gem.
