Unique relic of Royal Navy history from World War I. This is a beautiful little silver shield measuring 2 ¼" high x 2" wide. The fine engraving reads: "SHIELD ON WHICH THE CORD WAS CUT FOR LAUNCHING THE SUBMARINE J6 BY H.M. KING GEORGE V, 9TH SEPT. 1915."
J6 was an advanced diesel-electric design. It had three screws and could reach a speed of 19.5 knots (36 km/h) on the surface, almost as fast as a battleship. The J6 met a tragic end in 1918 when it was mistaken for a German U-boat and sunk by a British warship with a loss of 14 men.

Condition is excellent with fine, deep engraving. The shield was attached to a backing with three tiny nails. The heads of two are still there. It was framed in a tasteful modern frame, but we can ship it with or without the frame. Don’t miss this one-of-a-kind piece.
