Danish Modern Cat Tile
This terrific cat tile plaque was made by Soholm, in Denmark, circa 1960's. Measuring 7 3/8" x 6 5/8" by 1" thick. Created with glazes that look like crackle glass, this was made using the cuenca (raised line) technique. Signed by the designer, Simou,, to the left of the upper part of the tail. Danish Modern Tile Plaque by Soholm
This large fabulous ceramic tile plaque was made by Soholm, in Denmark, circa 1960's. Measuring 13 1/4" square, this depicts a man and a woman standing in a stylized horse - great bird on the "stern" of the rocking horse boat, and a cool sunflower comes up from the bow! Created with glazes that look like crackle glass, this was made using the cuenca (raised line) technique. Signed by the designer, Simou, on the front, lower right corner. In outstanding condition.

Three Fantoni Style Moderne tiles
Set of three lozenge shaped ceramic tiles, set into wood frames. Each frame is 13 5/8" long by 5" wide. The tiles have curved edges and measures 6 ¾"; long by 2 3/8" wide. They are hand painted with a shiny clear glaze on top. Designs of 3 stylized woman wearing fun hats. They look very much like the work of Fantoni (Italy), but are not signed. All are in excellent condition. (#T-1301)

Wheeling tile for Wheeler Ware
Nice retro design on this hand painted tile that's 6" square. Made on a Wheeling Tile Company blank, this is glazed on all 6 sides. The back has an unglaze stamp that says "Wheeler Ware" "Lakeville, Connecticut". Pretty cool! One tiny edge nip, surface is very nice, and crazing lines with dirt in them showing on the back. (#1319)

Portuguese Tile
Made by Gresval, this tile from Portugal boasts an outstanding combination of glazes. The background is a gun metal black with a matte finish. The interior designs have a crackled glass look, done in a bright blue and browns. This measures 6 1/4" square. I am unsure of the age of the tile, but it looks to be around 1940 - 1950. There is minor edge roughness and a tight factory firing line. Great for a moderne or retro look! (#1018)

Native American Thunderbird on Tile - DHC
Nice tile made at Desert House of Crafts in Tucson, Arizona, circa 1950-60. A native American / Indian Thunderbird is the design - tile measures 3" square - done in raised line, possibly designed by the McKusick / Gila Pottery. Set in a hand made copper frame, which is 6" square. One very minor glaze nip or skip - generally very nice condition. (#T-1276)

American Olean Cactus Tile
This tile shows a cactus in the foreground and hills in the background. Done in both wax resist method and glaze painting, the detail and pooling of glazes in wonderful! Heavy red clay body - the back is marked American Olean Quarry Tile USA on the back. Measures 6" square and is 1/2" thick. In outstanding condition. A very unusual tile for American Olean - as their main production was bathroom floor and wall tile. Circa 1960's. Gun Metal Black and Cranberry Tile
Great design elements on this tile that measures 4 1/8" square by 1/2" thick. The gun metal black glaze is super and the cranberry glaze in the recessed areas has a nice curdling effect on the edges. Vintage Shriners Tile by Wheeling Tile Company
The symbols for the Shriners adorn this 4 ¼" square tile made by the Wheeling Tile Company, of Wheeling West Virginia. The tube lined design has a cream to light yellow high glaze background with colors of blue and gold in black outline. Probably made in the 1930s or 40s, this has an original paper label and is in mint condition. (#1302)

Aquarius Tile by Schreckengost / Summitville
Made while at Summitville Tile, this was designed by Don Schreckengost. One of his famous "sculptured Zodiac" lines of tiles - this is Aquarius - the water bearer. Done in a silver over black glaze. Measures just over 6" square. Extreme relief - over 2" - probably the highest relief I've seen on a tile. Heavy - red clay body, inscribed Summitville on the back. Excellent condition. I have 3 other tiles in this series. See Lois Lehner's book "US Marks on Pottery Porcelain and Clay" for a complete history of Don Schreckengost and Summitville. (#T-1241)
