Spanish Style Tiles

The Spanish Style is a popular look. It represents a diverse sampling of tiles from many countries and from many time periods. It encompasses work from more modern tile artists (such as Daniel Zuloaga), traditional Moorish and Hispano Moresque styles, as well as the work done by San Jose Potteries. Please see the each inidividual tile descriptions for the specifics on age and maker.

T1334
Scenic Signed Tile - Mountain Village The scene shows a man on a burro coming down the streets of a village built on a hill. A church and mountains are in the background. Signed with a conjoined "I B" in the lower left corner. This well executed tile was done in the cuerda seca method (aka wax resist). The tile measures 8" x 3 3/4" - with the frame it measures 8 5/8" x 4 1/2". I have 3 other tiles done by the same artist in stock. Done on a red clay blank - there are no backmarks - age and country of origin are unknown. Generally excellent condition. (#T-1334)

T1147
Daniel Zuloaga Spanish Scenic Tile Daniel Zuloaga is the artist who executed this tile panel. He was an extremely accomplished and important Spanish ceramist (1852-1921). Measuring 8 3/8" x 6 1/4", this raised line design has very pleasing glazes. The scene shows a monk or friar in the main foreground with tall stucco buildings and an arched stone gateway behind him. In the distance is a man riding a burro, a man walking, a cluster of people near the arch and a person in an upper window.

This tile is in generally very nice condition. Three exceedingly minor glaze nips on the edges, and a factory glaze skip in the blue sky. Impressed mark on the back. (#T-1147)

Tile with mythical creature Interesting subject on this 5 ¾" square tile - some kind of creature with a man’s head, and the body of a lion. Looks like there’s a rat or a mouse on his rump as well! White background with several shades of blue and black outlining, and a semi matte finish. This is in excellent condition. The back is not marked but I suspect this is Spanish from the 1940’s. 1577
Spanish Tile Don Quixote Unmarked Spanish tile measuring 5 3/8" square. Decorated in the cuerda seca method, the scene is of a man, woman and child serving food to a solider - probably a scene from Don Quixote. Two different numbers on the tile back - minor edge roughness on the tile and a small loss to the lower right corner. Probably circa 1940. (#1577)

1184
Matador and Bull Tile Great scene of a matador on a horse - a charging bull and a ladies hat. A transfer type process was used for the scene - colors are a bright yellow background with brown, black, white, muted purple and gold. Measures 5 3/4" square. Back is marked with the word "FOREIGN". Maker and age are unknown - my guess would be Spanish. Minor right edge roughness - generally very nice condition. (#1184)
