T1771

Pair Antique Figural Architectural Terra Cotta Panels Fabulous and unusual pair of terra cotta panel - with nice high relief areas. Both measures 11 3/4" high x 6" wide by 1" thick. The right tile design is a pitcher with flowers coming out of the top - draped with cloth - books are propped up against the bottom left side of the pitcher. The pitcher has a great scene on it - a man sits in a chair, holding a paper or book in his right hand and a woman stands looking down at him. Two children are running around a tree (just to the upper right of the couple).

The left tile design is a lidded cornucopia - the lid has a birds head . The bottom of the cornucopia swirls back up into another birds head with a long beak.
Condition: The left tile has a large chip and crack on the left side (and part of a hairline from this on the back). It also has a top left edge chip. The right tile has a chip on the right edge 3/4 way down. Both have minor traces of mortar. These were obviously de-installed.

Unmarked - circa 1880-1900 - probably American. Truly classic designs. Outstanding if framed. (#T-1771)

T1365

Antique German Art Nouveau Style Stove Tile This stove tile measures 7 3/4" wide by 8 1/2" high by 1/2" thick. The design, which is molded in medium and low relief, shows two stylized flowers flowing in a stippled background and a curvilinear design in the center. Done is a blue green majolica glaze. There are very shallow glaze flakes on the self framing edge, which have been previously touched up. This de-installed tile was made in Germany, circa 1890. Shows beautifully and would look fabulous framed. See the other two German stove tiles I have that compliment this one! (#T-1365)

T1071

Porcelain Tile Plaque with Roses This is a lovely porcelain hand painted tile plaque featuring roses and their leaves. One wonderful bud is open near the bottom, with 3 other roses in various stages above it. Signed and dated "Carole Ann 80" in the lower right corner. This measures 14 3/4" x 8 3/4". I have not unframed this, but I suspect that the tile itself measures about 12" x 6" (a fairly standard size). The frame is wood (in two muted tones of brown and green). The plaque is in excellent condition. There is a minor separation in the upper right corner of the frame (can be fixed with one small brad or nail) - and there is a piece of felt on the bottom edge of the frame. A classic Victorian look - roses are very desirable in tiles and plaques. (#T-1071)

T1070

Hand Painted Antique Porcelain Plaques Beautifully detailed, hand painting on this pair of porcelain plaques. Each plaque measures 15 3/4" tall by 8 3/4" wide. Total size with frame 18 1/2" by 10 1/2". European in origin, circa 1880, unmarked. Both plaques are signed by the artist, one in the lower left corner, the other in the lower right corner. The scenes are elegant ladies of the period, dressed in their finest. One appears to be outside of a church or chapel, carrying a rosary. The other appears to be opening a letter of gift, and is wearing a chatelaine. The plaque at the chapel has one long crack, running horizontally across the piece (about 2" up from the bottom), and glued together. The fortunate thing is that the crack is not tremendously noticeable from the front. A professional restoration would easily make this invisible. (#T-1070)

T1364

Antique German Stove Tile with Majolica Glaze This stove tile measures 8 1/4" high by 7 1/2" wide by 1/2" thick. This flower resembling a daisy or sunflower. Executed is a dark blue majolica glaze, with hints of turquoise, the design is molded in nice medium relief. Made in Germany, circa 1890. This has been de-installed, and the sides and back were cut well. There is come very light glaze scuffing barely noticeable, there are several very small glaze nicks on the ridge work background and side edge (again, hard to see). Generally in very nice condition. See the other two German stove tiles I have that compliment this one! Great Aesthetic Movement look on this nice larger panel! (#T- 1364)

T1068

Antique Porcelain Tile Plaque This magnificent porcelain plaque is European in origin, probably dating around 1900, perhaps a tad earlier. This hand painted piece depicts a peasant girl looking down at coins in her hand and on the table. She is surrounded by the utilitarian furnishing in the house. Signed in the lower right corner by the artist. Plaque measures 9 3/4" x 7 1/8". The period frame (perhaps original to the piece), is wood and gesso. The frame has some wear, chips to all outside corners, a wear spot to the middle of the left edge (with the gold near the plaque) and the top right corner. The plaque itself is in outstanding condition. (#T-1068)

T-1505

Antique German Stove Tile Panel with Musical Cherubs This self framed large panel has a scene with seven cherubs playing musical instruments. There's a cello, several violins, a xylophone, a flute, a horn, and a singer. This is meant to imitate a tropical atmosphere - see the bamboo or palm type vegetation and the beads around the neck of one cherub. The molded design uses an effective combination of low, medium and very high reliefs. Made in Germany, by Mugeln, this was part of a German stove panel, circa 1880 - 1890. There is a factory repaired chip on the right edge, and two very small chips (colored in) on the self framing edge. This has a very attractive medium brown majolica glaze. This large panel measures 16 1/2" long by 9 3/4" wide by just shy of 1" thick. In extremely nice condition. (#T-1505)

Each tile measures 6" square, and is done in a medium lime green majolica glaze. The three tiles display nicely together, however note that the patterns don't match up exactly. The complete pattern had 5 tiles. The top 2 tiles each have minor edge wear and some small chips. We have a 4 tile cattail panel in a brownish green glaze as well. (#1339)

T-1506

Antique Stove Tile - Sailing Ship with Majolica Glaze This great tile panel originally came from a German stove. It depicts a three masted sailing ship and features an outstanding brown majolica glaze. The design is executed in very high relief - in places as much as 1/2". This large, heavy panel measures 12" long by 8 5/8" wide, by just shy of 1 1/2" thick. Made in Germany, by Mugeln, this dates around 1880 - 1890. This has a self framing edge - and was cut from a larger panel. There is a tight hairline developing on the top edge which goes onto the tile face through the self framing edge (above the right most mast). This flaw will be nicely concealed when this tile is mounted or framed. There are a few minor edge flakes, and a few small nips to high points. All in all, still in very nice condition. (#T-1506)

Four Tile Cattail Panel by American Encaustic This 4 tile vertical panel was made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company, of Zanesville, Ohio around 1890. Each tile measures 6" square, and is done in a brownish green majolica glaze. The four tiles display nicely together, however note that the pattern on the top and second tiles don't match up exactly. There would have been another tile in the pattern between these. All tiles are in very nice condition, with only the most minor edge wear. There is an extra tile with the set - that is a duplicate of the second tile from the top (for a total of 5 tiles). We have a 3 tile cattail panel in a lime green glaze as well. (#1477)

Tube lined sailing ship panel - signed This hand made panel depicts sailing ships on the water. The bottom tile shows the reflection of the sails on the water. The tiles are tube lined, aka squeeze bag technique. The high glaze colors are very pleasing: beiges, blues, greens, and browns, with the outlining (squeeze bag) done in black. The artists name is at the bottom right, Bond. Although I do not know specifically who this is, the tiles are well executed. I suspect this is from the 1940s, and looks to be American. The panel, with the black wood frame, measures 19 ¼ " tall by 7 1/8" wide. It is made up of three 6 tiles. The condition is excellent. (#T-1255)

This wonderful tile is shown on page 108 of the book "Fired Earth - 1000 Years of Tiles in Europe". Three of the 4 tiles have a larger leaf wrapping up around the right side of the central flower. One has the leaf wrapping around the left side. All tiles are in outstanding condition. (#1151)

Antique Portrait Tiles by AET There is a wonderful chocolate brown glaze on this matched pair of portrait tiles made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company (Zanesville, OH), circa 1890. The relief is extremely high. Each tile is 8" square, and has the early AET mark on the back. The condition is very good. There are no problems on any of the high relief areas of the portraits - which is unusual. There are 2 small areas of professional restoration on the female - on the upper edge of the circle over her head, and in the bottom left corner. The male tile has one small area of restoration on the circle edge over his head. Marvelous portrait tile pair - would look exceptional framed! (#T-1054)
