T2042

Rare Los Angeles Pressed Brick Figural Tile Panel This gorgeous tile panel depicts putti (aka cherubs) playing musical instruments and dancing.
Done in a reddish brown glaze, they called this a vellum glaze. The cherubs are in low relief. The panel measures 9 3/4" x 5". The tile panel is set into an older solid wood frame that measures 12 3/4" x 8 1/2".

LA Pressed Brick tiles are rare and hard to come by. The company was in business from 1887 – 1926. The decorative tile production began in 1907. Fred H. Roberston was one of the main designers of their decorative tile. The tile has had a professional and invisible restoration. The tile is clearly marked on the back with not only the LAPB mark, but also with an impressed F.H.R. - for Fred H. Roberston. A great piece to add to your Arts & Crafts Movement tile or pottery collection. (#T-2042)

T1771

Pair Antique Figural Architectural Terra Cotta Panels Fabulous and unusual pair of terra cotta panel - with nice high relief areas. Both measures 11 3/4" high x 6" wide by 1" thick. The right tile design is a pitcher with flowers coming out of the top - draped with cloth - books are propped up against the bottom left side of the pitcher. The pitcher has a great scene on it - a man sits in a chair, holding a paper or book in his right hand and a woman stands looking down at him. Two children are running around a tree (just to the upper right of the couple).

The left tile design is a lidded cornucopia - the lid has a birds head . The bottom of the cornucopia swirls back up into another birds head with a long beak.
Condition: The left tile has a large chip and crack on the left side (and part of a hairline from this on the back). It also has a top left edge chip. The right tile has a chip on the right edge 3/4 way down. Both have minor traces of mortar. These were obviously de-installed.

Unmarked - circa 1880-1900 - probably American. Truly classic designs. Outstanding if framed. (#T-1771)

Click for more detail...

T-1506

Antique Stove Tile - Sailing Ship with Majolica Glaze This great tile panel originally came from a German stove. It depicts a three masted sailing ship and features an outstanding brown majolica glaze. The design is executed in very high relief - in places as much as 1/2". This large, heavy panel measures 12" long by 8 5/8" wide, by just shy of 1 1/2" thick. Made in Germany, by Mugeln, this dates around 1880 - 1890. This has a self framing edge - and was cut from a larger panel. There is a tight hairline developing on the top edge which goes onto the tile face through the self framing edge (above the right most mast). This flaw will be nicely concealed when this tile is mounted or framed. There are a few minor edge flakes, and a few small nips to high points. All in all, still in very nice condition. (#T-1506)

245792

Tube lined sailing ship panel - signed This hand made panel depicts sailing ships on the water. The bottom tile shows the reflection of the sails on the water. The tiles are tube lined, aka squeeze bag technique. The high glaze colors are very pleasing: beiges, blues, greens, and browns, with the outlining (squeeze bag) done in black. The artists name is at the bottom right, Bond. Although I do not know specifically who this is, the tiles are well executed. I suspect this is from the 1940s, and looks to be American. The panel, with the black wood frame, measures 19 ¼ " tall by 7 1/8" wide. It is made up of three 6 tiles. The condition is excellent. (#T-1255)

T1065

Antique Tile by Ipsen - Pat Sur Pat High Relief Rasmus Peter Ipsen founded a terra cotta firm in 1843 in Copenhagen. He died in 1860. His son carried on the business until 1900, under the name of P. Ipsens Enke. This plaque is marked, on the back, " P. Ipsen Kjobenhavn Eneret #386 ". I do believe that this was made during the father’s time. It depicts a seated woman, holding a basket full of winged cherubs, with one flying up from her right hand. A dog is seated next to her. The background is a dark terra cotta color (lighter and a bit more red than the photo show), with the figures in very high relief in a whitish/buff color. Very typical pate sur pate style. The plaque is self framed and is a painted gilt with a greek key motif running along it. The panel is 9 ¼" high by
8 5/8" across - the relief is over ¾" in some spots! The condition is very good. There is one very slight line in the clay, near the bottom of the left side. (#T-1065)

The design is spectacularly highlighted by the use of iridescent luster (aka lustre) glazes of oranges/golds/browns. This wonderful tile is shown on page 108 of the book "Fired Earth - 1000 Years of Tiles in Europe". Three of the 4 tiles have a larger leaf wrapping up around the right side of the central flower. One has the leaf wrapping around the left side. All tiles are in outstanding condition. (#1151)

Danish Modern Tile Plaque by Soholm This large fabulous ceramic tile plaque was made by Soholm, in Denmark, circa 1960's. Measuring 13 1/4" square, this depicts a man and a woman standing in a stylized horse - great bird on the "stern" of the rocking horse boat, and a cool sunflower comes up from the bow! T1070

Hand Painted Antique Porcelain Plaques Beautifully detailed, hand painting on this pair of porcelain plaques. Each plaque measures 15 3/4" tall by 8 3/4" wide. Total size with frame 18 1/2" by 10 1/2". European in origin, circa 1880, unmarked. Both plaques are signed by the artist, one in the lower left corner, the other in the lower right corner. The scenes are elegant ladies of the period, dressed in their finest. One appears to be outside of a church or chapel, carrying a rosary. The other appears to be opening a letter of gift, and is wearing a chatelaine. The plaque at the chapel has one long crack, running horizontally across the piece (about 2" up from the bottom), and glued together. The fortunate thing is that the crack is not tremendously noticeable from the front. A professional restoration would easily make this invisible. (#T-1070)

Danish Modern Tile - Two Cats and Fish Two cats and two fish are the subject matter for this whimsical large tile plaque. Danish modern in style, the glazes are heavily crackled and look like glass. The tile measures 11 3/4" x 9 3/4". It is solidly mounted in a heavy black wood frame which is 1 1/4" thick. The entire framed panel measures 16" x 14". There is a glazed over mark on the back, which I cannot make out. Probably circa 1940's to 1950's. In excellent condition.

T1071

Porcelain Tile Plaque with Roses This is a lovely porcelain hand painted tile plaque featuring roses and their leaves. One wonderful bud is open near the bottom, with 3 other roses in various stages above it. Signed and dated "Carole Ann 80" in the lower right corner. This measures 14 3/4" x 8 3/4". I have not unframed this, but I suspect that the tile itself measures about 12" x 6" (a fairly standard size). The frame is wood (in two muted tones of brown and green). The plaque is in excellent condition. There is a minor separation in the upper right corner of the frame (can be fixed with one small brad or nail) - and there is a piece of felt on the bottom edge of the frame. A classic Victorian look - roses are very desirable in tiles and plaques. (#T-1071)
