T1147
Daniel Zuloaga Spanish Scenic Tile Daniel Zuloaga is the artist who executed this tile panel. He was an extremely accomplished and important Spanish ceramist (1852-1921). Measuring 8 3/8" x 6 1/4", this raised line design has very pleasing glazes. The scene shows a monk or friar in the main foreground with tall stucco buildings and an arched stone gateway behind him. In the distance is a man riding a burro, a man walking, a cluster of people near the arch and a person in an upper window.

This tile is in generally very nice condition. Three exceedingly minor glaze nips on the edges, and a factory glaze skip in the blue sky. Impressed mark on the back. (#T-1147)

1151
Art Nouveau Luster Tile Set This is a set of 4 Art Nouveau tiles made by Maw & Company, England, ca 1900. Each tile measures 6" square. The design is spectacularly highlighted by the use of iridescent luster (aka lustre) glazes of oranges/golds/browns. This wonderful tile is shown on page 108 of the book "Fired Earth - 1000 Years of Tiles in Europe". Three of the 4 tiles have a larger leaf wrapping up around the right side of the central flower. One has the leaf wrapping around the left side. All tiles are in outstanding condition. (#1151)

T1323
Chinese Tile - Musicians This hand made tile has a terrific scene of 4 Chinese gentlemen; three are playing musical instruments and one is singing. Measuring about 7 3/4" square, with a touch a variation since the tile is not perfectly square. The figures are incised, and the tile has pleasing muted semi matte glaze colors of a dark gold to brown, green, navy blue and cream. This is #1 of 4 of a series; this one has a green background. One very minor left edge glaze flake - generally very nice condition. Unmarked, age unknown but I suspect these might be from the late 20th Century. (#T1323)

T1067
Antique Tile Plaque with Putti and Fire This outstanding antique ceramic tile plaque is oval in shape - which is unusual. The scene shows three cherubs near a small bonfire - you can see the smoke curling up from the fire. In the background to the right is a tree, and behind them is what looks like draped curtains. The majolica glaze is a blue green and heavily pooled at the top - some crazing can be seen in this heavily pooled area when the tile is tipped to show the shine. The figures are molded in very nice relief. This measures 7 3/4" in width and 6 3/4" from top to bottom. There are two factory holes in the back at the top, used for hanging. There is some wear to the glaze on the back, and only the absolute most minor of wear to two highpoints on the front side. Generally in extremely nice condition. Unmarked, probably English, definitely circa 1880. (#T-1067)

Danish Modern Tile Plaque by Soholm This large fabulous ceramic tile plaque was made by Soholm, in Denmark, circa 1960's. Measuring 13 1/4" square, this depicts a man and a woman standing in a stylized horse - great bird on the "stern" of the rocking horse boat, and a cool sunflower comes up from the bow! Created with glazes that look like crackle glass, this was made using the cuenca (raised line) technique. Signed by the designer, Simou, on the front, lower right corner. In outstanding condition.

145772
Antique Portrait Tiles by AET There is a wonderful chocolate brown glaze on this matched pair of portrait tiles made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company (Zanesville, OH), circa 1890. The relief is extremely high. Each tile is 8" square, and has the early AET mark on the back. The condition is very good. There are no problems on any of the high relief areas of the portraits - which is unusual. There are 2 small areas of professional restoration on the female - on the upper edge of the circle over her head, and in the bottom left corner. The male tile has one small area of restoration on the circle edge over his head. Marvelous portrait tile pair - would look exceptional framed! (#T-1054)
