T2078

St. George Slaying the Dragon Stove Tile This tile depicts a classic and historical scene - of Saint George Slaying the Dragon. It measures 6" x 8" and is 3/4" thick. Depicts a knight on horseback - with his lance going into a dragon that is beneath the horse. There is a Latin phrase just over his head.

This are several firing cracks on the back - and remnants of either kiln blobs or an installation on the sides of the tile. Molded design in raised line. Green majolica glaze. Age and country of origin are unknown. This handmade tile does not lay flat - there is an upward curve to the piece. A fascinating example of timeless subject matter. (#T-2078)

T1365

Antique German Art Nouveau Style Stove Tile This stove tile measures 7 3/4" wide by 8 1/2" high by 1/2" thick. The design, which is molded in medium and low relief, shows two stylized flowers flowing in a stippled background and a curvilinear design in the center. Done is a blue green majolica glaze. There are very shallow glaze flakes on the self framing edge, which have been previously touched up. This de-installed tile was made in Germany, circa 1890. Shows beautifully and would look fabulous framed. See the other two German stove tiles I have that compliment this one! (#T-1365)

T1331

Matching Pair of Blue Portrait Antique Stove Tiles This is an attractive pair of matched stove tiles - they feature ladies profiles, and are done in a lovely medium to light blue majolica glaze. Each tile has a center hole - this was one of the methods used to attach the tile to the parlor stove. (The other, more common method, was the use of an outside "lip" on the tile, and a bracket went across the back of the tile on the interior of the stove.)

Each tile measures 3 1/2" in diameter (across the back). The designs are modeled in medium relief. Both tiles show glaze wear and nips, primarily on the higher spots above the foreheads. Please see photos for closeups. They still display very nicely.

Both are unmarked, American, circa 1890. There were only a few companies that made stove tiles - so, they were probably made by either Providential Tile Company, Trent Tile Company, or the Beaver Falls Art Tile Company. (#T1331)

T-1505

Antique German Stove Tile Panel with Musical Cherubs This self framed large panel has a scene with seven cherubs playing musical instruments. There's a cello, several violins, a xylophone, a flute, a horn, and a singer. This is meant to imitate a tropical atmosphere - see the bamboo or palm type vegetation and the beads around the neck of one cherub. The molded design uses an effective combination of low, medium and very high reliefs. Made in Germany, by Mugeln, this was part of a German stove panel, circa 1880 - 1890. There is a factory repaired chip on the right edge, and two very small chips (colored in) on the self framing edge. This has a very attractive medium brown majolica glaze. This large panel measures 16 1/2" long by 9 3/4" wide by just shy of 1" thick. In extremely nice condition. (#T-1505)

stove021

Rare Signed Antique Stove Tile This is a fabulous unglazed stove tile - done in raised relief. Has a left facing profile of a man wearing an ornate helmet. On the right hand side is the cipher of the modeler - I have been unable to decipher this or attribute it to anyone - and the tile is exceedingly well done. In the back of my mind I always thought this could be a Low tile....? Definitely dates around 1880-1900 - and is American.

The tile measures 2 3/4" in diameter. Plain flat back. I have not cleaned this - and it could do with some cleaning. There is a chip at about 1:00 o'clock (near the top of the helmet), two smaller nips across from his mouth, tiny little nips on the back/bottom edge.

Isaac Broome Portrait Stove Tile This stove tile depicts a portrait of a young boy. He is adorned with a lacy collar (typical of Victorian costume) and a cap. Measuring 3" in diameter, this is done in an unusual green majolica glaze. Generally in nice condition - there are minor nips around the bolt hole, a small section of his collar, and minor rim roughness. The tile bears Isaac Broome's cipher (a conjoined I and B) to the right of the bottom of the child's' cap (at about 4 o'clock). Unmarked on the back - made at either the Providential Tile Company of the Trent Tile Company. Signed Broome stove tiles are one of the harder antique tiles to come across.

Rare Pink Antique Tile of a Young Girl Pink is one of the rarest glaze colors found on antique tiles - and this particular color is lovely. The tile, done in intaglio technique, depicts a young girl with a blanket. There's a small "c" copyright symbol in the lower right corner. The self framing edge is raised in bullnose type relief. The maker of this wonderful tile is Hemixem, in Belgium, circa 1900. Stove016

Antique Stove Tile - Rare Color This is a large stove tile in a very unusual mint green color. I've never seen this color before! Measures 3 1/2" in diameter, relief is medium to low. This is a portrait of a woman, facing left. Unmarked. Small glaze nips under the hole, on the left edge, and to a couple higher areas - the stuff under her eye is gone (it was dirt!). There is a chip out of the back, which does not affect the tile face. Center bolt hole was used to attach this to a parlor stove - circa 1880.
