ZM1

Rare Zanesville Majolica Stove Tile This fabulous round stove tile measures 4" in diameter. The design is molded in very high relief, and shows a portrait of a heavily bearded man. He is wearing a feathered hat and the ruffles on his collar are showing. I believe this was probably made by the Zanesville Majolica Company, of Zanesville, Ohio, 1882 - 1884. See bottom right photo in "American Art Tile" by Norman Karlson for the same interior design. Done in rich brown majolica glazes, with mottled edges, this is in outstanding condition.

Portrait Stove Tile in Silver Frame This is a round antique portrait tile mounted in a silver frame. No marks on the silver frame, which has a nice beaded edge on the inside rim. The tile features a woman, facing left, wearing a pearl necklace done in a yellow gold majolica glaze. Click here to enlarge image and see more about item T1331: Matching Pair of Blue Portrait Antique Stove Tiles

Click for more detail...

T1331

Matching Pair of Blue Portrait Antique Stove Tiles This is an attractive pair of matched stove tiles - they feature ladies profiles, and are done in a lovely medium to light blue majolica glaze. Each tile has a center hole - this was one of the methods used to attach the tile to the parlor stove. (The other, more common method, was the use of an outside "lip" on the tile, and a bracket went across the back of the tile on the interior of the stove.)

Each tile measures 3 1/2" in diameter (across the back). The designs are modeled in medium relief. Both tiles show glaze wear and nips, primarily on the higher spots above the foreheads. Please see photos for closeups. They still display very nicely.

Both are unmarked, American, circa 1890. There were only a few companies that made stove tiles - so, they were probably made by either Providential Tile Company, Trent Tile Company, or the Beaver Falls Art Tile Company. (#T1331)

T1936

Unusual Portrait Tile This small tile is very interesting. Done in a classic Delft blue and white, this tile has a white bisque face that stands up and out from the body of the tile. Measuring 2 5/8" x 2" by 1" high in relief. The back has incised markings of 2/6 and 1928. This was obviously made in 1928 - I suspect that the "2/6" might mean that there were 6 of these produced, and this is the second one. This looks to be a product of the Mosaic Tile Company, Zanesville, Ohio, however I can find no documentation on it. In excellent condition. (#T-1936)

209211

Antique Stove Tile - putti and pottery For pottery collectors, the subject matter of this tile just doesn’t get any better! Shows a young boy hugging and kissing a large pot. Done in a blue to bluish green majolica glaze - this oval tile would probably have been originally used for ornamentation in a parlor stove. Dating from circa 1890, this is molded in extremely high relief. Country of origin not known, but probably English. Measures 8" x 4 ¾". Back side has chipping. There is a crack which extends down from his front foot to the tile edge, runs horizontally then goes back up near his other foot. The front surface and relief work are in excellent condition. Providential Stove tiles - set of 4 A super set of 4 stove tiles, made by the Providential Tile Works, of Trenton, New Jersey. These date around 1880 - 1890 and all 4 are the same design - 5 open flowers - probably sunflowers. Done in a greenish gold majolica glaze (very typical of the period), each tile measures 2 5/8" in diameter (across the back). Two tiles have had hangers fashioned for the back, two do not. The mark on these is unusual - T.P.T.W. - which stands for "The Providential Tile Works" - usually displayed as PTW. All four tiles are in excellent condition.
