Mosaic Tile Company Dog Tile Great whimsical dog on a leash is the design on this tile made by the Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio, circa 1930-1940. Measures just over 4 ¼" square. Done in the wax resist method. Matte glazes. Excellent condition. (#1587)

Antique Maw Art Nouveau Luster Tile - #2 This 6" square tile was made by Maw & Company (England), circa 1900. The Art Nouveau design is spectacularly highlighted by the use of iridescent luster (aka lustre) glazes of oranges/golds/browns. This wonderful tile is shown on page 108 of the book "Fired Earth - 1000 Years of Tiles in Europe". This tile has a larger leaf wrapping up around the left side of the central flower. The companion tile to this, with the leaf wrapping around the left side, is also available. There's a minor amount of edge roughness to the upper right side of the tile - generally in excellent condition.

Matte Green Framed Wheatley Pottery Tile Made by the Wheatley Pottery Co, of Cincinnati, Ohio this tile features a curdled matte green glaze in the recesses. The design of 4 conjoined circles is in nice relief, and like the self framing edge, has a matte light brown glaze. Measuring 4 1/4" square, and ¾" thick, this is design number 1033, circa 1925. The condition is excellent.

This is mounted in a custom made 3/4" solid oak frame with two flutes. The framed size is 9" square. (#T-1220)

Batchelder Tile - Man Carrying Spear - Framed Man holding a large spear in his right hand - by Batchelder, Los Angeles, CA, ca 1920's. Matte reddish tan finish, blue engobe in recesses, measures 5 7/8" square by 5/8" thick. Design #23 in the Batchelder Tiles catalog. De-installed tile with an excellent front tile surface. Some slight mortar/grout in a couple of the recesses. The back clearly shows the de-installation and some remaining mortar. This is mounted in a hand made solid wood oak frame - total measurement is 10 3/4" square. (#4574 - T-1152 )

Moravian Brocade Tile Man with Wheat and Scythe The Moravian Pottery & Tile Works, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania still continues to make its tiles by the original method used when Henry Mercer was still alive. This tile is one of their remakes from 1976, (dated on the back), and it is a brocade tile showing a man using a scythe to cut wheat. The glazes are matte, semi matte and high glaze - and the colors are very nice. Measures 4 1/4" x 3 3/4". There are two light kiln cracks on the back, which do not affect the integrity of the tile. Beehive, Bee and Star Tile Great hand made tile – made in the cuenca (raised line) technique. Measures 6" square x ½" thick. Depicts a bee flying near its hive and a star with rays shining right. This may be a religious symbol or from a particular fraternal organization. Semi matte glazes with metallic gold. Unknown maker and age – looks like it is American and probably around ca. 1920. Wheatley faience carved multicolor tile Wheatley Pottery of Cincinnati, Ohio was the maker of this deeply carved tile. Measuring 6" square x ¾" thick, this has a background color of muted gray, and recessed colors of salmon, pale mint green, and teal blue. All matte glazes. Dating from ca 1915, this is marked "WP" on the reverse, and has two sets of numbers. #1097 is the catalog number. Although de-installed, this is in truly excellent condition. The glaze is hand applied, and does not flow into every crevice, adding to its true uniqueness. There are two <1/16" edge nips. A fine example of this pottery’s work with unusual colors. (#1107)

Depicts a colonial man and woman sitting inside a house - you can see a spinning wheel behind them. Self framing edge, molded in low relief, matte glazes and engobes. Measures 11 1/2" x 5 3/4" x 5/8" thick - marked on the back. Muted colors of brown, tan, blue, rust, pink, and green. Chip to right side in the self framing border. Generally very good condition.

Empire or Flint Faience A&C Tile Table This tile was made by two companies - Flint Faience and Empire (aka Owens). The main tile is 6" square - design is a basket overflowing with fruit. Done in wax resist method. Matte green background and additional matte glazes of yellow, orange, black deep cranberry mottled brown-orange. Excellent condition. 4 border tiles (each 6" x 1") in same matte glaze color as the interior diamonds on the basket - 4 small high glaze black corner tiles (one has a corner chip). Wrought iron table base - gray color.
