Aesthetic Movement Tile with Dog This is a wonderful Aesthetic Movement transferware tile. There are two related scenes in the design on this tile. The upper circle shows two ducks flying over a marsh. The lower circle has a retriever dog with a duck in its mouth. Transfer printed in dark brown on cream. The tile is 6" square. Circa 1890. This tile is either a product by Minton Hollins (England) or ITT (International Tile & Trim Co.) Brooklyn, NY. In very nice condition, with only minor edge roughness. (#1609)

Aesthetic Movement Tile with Fox This is a wonderful Aesthetic Movement transferware tile. There are two related scenes in the design on this tile. The upper circle shows a fox that is prowling the edge of a body of water. The lower circle has an adult pheasant and 3 baby pheasants. Transfer printed in dark brown on cream. Measures 6" square. Circa 1890. This tile is either a product by Minton Hollins (England) or ITT (International Tile & Trim Co.) Brooklyn, NY. In nice condition. The bottom left edge has a chip – and there is minor edge roughness. This would look excellent in frame. (#1614)

Water Bird Tile made by Richard E Bishop This outstanding tile was made by Richard E. Bishop. It depicts a bird in flight, on a light turquoise background. Raised line technique, combination of matte and semi matte glazes. Measures 6" square by 5/8" thick. This could be depicting a snipe or a bog sprite. It has a long black beak, a rusty brown body and brown and blue-gray wings. Impressed Richard E. Bishop on the back. In excellent condition. (#1864)

Richard Evett Bishop (1887-1975) – has a varied and well recognized career in art. He created the 1936 Federal Duck Stamp - and is particularly well know for his works depicting game birds and water fowl. Google his name for a full bio.

Duck Tile made by Richard E Bishop This outstanding tile was made by Richard E. Bishop. It depicts a duck in flight, on a light turquoise background. Raised line technique, combination of matte and semi matte glazes. The duck is done in glazes of blue-gray, pale gray, white, black, brown and has a blue beak. Measures 6" square by 5/8" thick. Impressed Richard E. Bishop on the back. Tiny glaze flake on upper right edge and bottom left edge. In excellent condition. (#1865)

Vintage Whimsical Horse Tile by Mosaic Tile Company This vintage tile was made by the Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio, circa 1956. It depicts an adorable horse or pony, who is prancing next to a wooden fence. Done in the wax resist technique, this has lovely muted shades of tan, green, brown blue in semi matte glazes. The tile measures 4 1/4" square by itself. It is nicely mounted in a handmade solid cherry wood frame, which measures 8 3/8" square and is 3/4" thick. The tile has an original paper label on the back from the Mosaic factory. It is design #4328, and was made on January 18, 1956. The tile is in excellent condition, and the frame is beautiful and ready to hang. We have another tile in this series – type T1150-F into the search box. (#T1150-E)

Mercer Moravian Byzantine Tile – Little Fox This tile was made by the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. It dates to around 1920 and is part of a series of tiles that Henry Mercer called Byzantine. Each tile in the series had a name and this one is Little Fox. It is #39 in one of the original Mercer tile catalogs. The tile measures 3 1/2" x 2 7/8" and is done in colors Mercer called blue and cream with red flush. It has a red clay body, and cream and blue high glazes, with the red of the clay showing through. This is in excellent condition – 3 small kiln pulls on the sides. We also have 3 others in this series – type Byzantine into the search box to find them! (#1828)

Hand Painted Antique Tile Dog Retriever & Duck This antique tile shows a dog retrieving a duck from a lake. There are birds in the background and rushes in the foreground. Painted on an English tile blank, this was executed by an artist named "Brownie Gerrish" - and signed and dated on the back – 1885. Minor edge nips – generally in very nice condition. This would look fabulous in a frame and hung on the wall of your favorite hunter's game room! (#1809)

Pegasus Tile by Moravian Pottery and Tile Works This Pegasus tile is from the Constellation series of tiles made by the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works in Doylestown, PA. It dates around 1920, and the larger tiles in this series are very hard to find. This measures 6 5/8" in diameter and is just over 1/2" thick. The tile design is pierced. The glaze is a speckled / mottled blue, with the buff color clay coming though to enhance it. There is a firing crack through the left leg of the winged horse – as is common with many of the older and larger Mercer tiles. Generally this is in very nice condition. This would be an amazing gift for that astronomer in your life! (#T-2104)

Batchelder Tile with Two Birds This Batchelder tile depicts two love birds facing each other, in a cartouche, with a fleur de lys between their feet. Done in a matte gray to beige finish, with a blue engobe in the recesses, this measures 5 n 5/8" square by 5/8" thick. It is design #444 in the Batchelder Tile catalog. This de-installed tile has a good front tile surface. There's a small chip in the wings of the bird on the left and a top right corner chip, minor mortar/grout in the recesses. The back shows the de-installation and some remaining mortar. Circa 1920's. (#1922-4580)

Round Swan Tile by Wheeling Done with a raised line technique, this is a really attractive tile made by the Wheeling Tile Company, of Wheeling, West Virginia, probably around the 1930's. This measures 6" in diameter and 3/8" thick. Cork applied to the back - but no mark visible. Nice matte glazes - in excellent condition. (#1709)

Gila Pottery / McKusick Tile by Apache Daniel Nash This well done tile depicts brown bear standing up on his hind legs - with a gorgeous tree in the background. Executed on a white background, this has muted glazes of brown, orange, green, burgundy, and taupe.. This is 5 3/4" square. Designed by the Apache, Daniel Nash, with an original paper label on the back. Mr. Nash is a well known Native American artist. Made by the McKusick's, of Globe, Arizona, circa 1960. Antique Moravian Pottery Tile Spanish Dolphin This is one of the harder to find series of tiles made by the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. It dates from circa 1920 – and is titled Spanish Dolphin. This is an unusually thick tile, measuring almost 1 1/4" at its highest point. It is relief molded and depicts a stylized dolphin. Done in red clay (not glazed) with a majolica blue glaze in the recesses and on the sides. The tile is handmade and measures about 3 1/2" square. In overall nice condition. There are two kiln pulls on the left side. Henry Mercer, the found of the tile works, created the consummate Arts & Crafts Movement tiles – and this one is a beauty! (#1824)
