X1007

Art Pottery Figural Fountain Spout This fabulous and unusual figural fountain spout is done in the design of head of a seal or sea lion. It's done in a rich dark brown to black glaze. The squared base of the spout measures 5 3/4" square and is between 3/4" - 7/8" thick. The relief is extraordinary – 4" high.

Although unmarked, this was most certainly made by a high quality Arts & Crafts Movement pottery / tile company. The clay was hand worked on the interior to help create the opening for the water. The work is good enough to have come from the Mueller Mosaic Tile Company.

There are quite a few glaze flakes on the seal and the base. That said – it is still a wonderful example of a whimsical spout. What a great addition to your garden! (X1007)

Click for more detail...

1164

Wild Burro Tile by Gila Pottery and Daniel Nash This tile was made by the McKusicks' of Gila Pottery in Globe, Arizona in the late 1950's to early 1960's. The tile design was done by a friend of theirs, Daniel Nash. Nash was a well known Native American Apache artist who not only created many tile designs for the McKusick's, but was quite famous in his own right as an artist. The tile depicts a wild burro. Wild burros were introduced into the US southwest by the Spaniards in the 1500's. Their long ears are characteristic of the breed. Equus Asinus is the latin name for this amazing animal. The tile measures 5 3/4" square. It has the impressed Gila Pottery mark on the back and is signed Nash D. on the front. It is in excellent condition. (#1164)

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 1226: Unusual William Wise Animal Tile

Click for more detail...

1226

Unusual William Wise Animal Tile At first glance, you would assume that this is the tile, designed by William Wise, called Highland Sheep, and made by Mintons China Works, ca 1890. That is certainly correct, but not all of the story! The back has the following "factory" impressed marks: "the Easel Tile Stand - Made By The Hayes Mfg. Co, Cleveland, Ohio USA".

There was a Hayes Manufacturing Company, located in Detroit, Michigan from 1904 - 1924. Hayes seemed to always be designing something new, and was a "pioneer in stamped sheet-metal fenders, and would eventually go on to produce hoods, cowls, tool boxes and complete bodies in two separate metro-Detroit factories". I don't know if this is the same company that is referenced on the tile back or not! But it certainly is interesting - I love these oddities!

Tile measures 6" square, dark brown on white transfer, and is in excellent condition. (#1226)

Click for more detail...

TDeco

Art Deco Reticulated Architectural Figural Tiles This pair of amazing Art Deco reticulated tiles was made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company of Zanesville, Ohio. Each of these large tiles measure 9" square and 1" thick. The glaze on both is a gun metal black with silver trim on the interior edges of the design and self framing edge.

Fabulous Art Deco matched designs of a man throwing a spear on one tile, and a woman throwing a weapon on the other. There is exceedingly minor edge roughness on both, and a back edge chip on one - generally outstanding condition for these unusual and large items.

The backs are both impressed with AETCO, and Z101L (on the left one) and Z101R (on the right one). Written, in glaze, on the back is "COL 03192 SILVER" and "Z-101" or "Z-101L". I believe the age to be circa 1920. (#T-1609)
