5867

Plymouth Rock Paperweight This is the largest (4 1/8" long) of 3 paperweights made c. 1876 to commemorate the landing of our Pilgrim Fathers. Maker unknown. This paperweight appears to have been dropped and rolled on the floor (sad, sad) as there are 3 surface bruises as well as a ¼" long surface flake between the bruises and above the "0". If you are still reading this, the most amazing thing about this piece is the 3 lines of text on the beveled bottom which say; "A rock in the wilderness welcomed our sires from bondage far over the dark rolling sea. On that holy altar they kindled the fires, Jehovah! Which glow in our bosoms for thee. Mary Chilton was the first to land upon the Rock, Dec. 21. 1620. In attempting to raise up the rock in 1775 it was split asunder. This is a fac-simile of the upper part. Inkstand Co. Prov. RI Pilgrim Rock Trademark 1876." There are 3 rows of inscriptions, 2 on the flat bottom surface and one on the tiny beveled edge above the bottom surface. (5867)

T1183

Robert Treat Commemorative Tile by Mosaic Tile Company Captain Robert Treat was the Governor of Connecticut, and is considered to be the founder of the city of Newark, New Jersey. In 1916, the city of Newark was 250 years old, and a great celebration took place. The Mosaic Tile Company was obviously commissioned to produce a tile in honor of this occasion. This hexagonal tile measures 3 1/2" from point to point, and a profile of the Captain is done in high relief on the tile's surface. The back is dated and heavily marked! This tile was also part of Mr. Sigafoose's tile collection. There is one minor shallow chip on the back - the tile is in generally excellent condition. (#T-1183)

PW07

President Garfield Memorial paperweight This is a 4" x 2 1/2" glass paperweight depicting the Garfield Memorial. There are traces of copper filings lining the steps along the sidewalk, along the lower roof and at the bottom of the highest cone. Most likely these were added to highlight these architectural features. "Garfield Memorial" is printed at the upper left. Tiny copper colored spots dot the blue sky that surrounds the Memorial, probably remnants of the copper filings that have escaped. This has a mirror back which still reflects well and is in tact. The mirror shows disintegration common to old mirrors.

Lion Head Glass Novelty Some collectors of Lion glass believe this was originally a jar lid. I have not seen any documentation of the maker or original use. It is a superb piece of glass. You will find in raised letters on the center back the word "PENDING". My assumption is that the patent was pending on this design. Great detail in eyes, nose and mouth. Frosted glass. 3 ½" d. x 1 7/8" h. Three miniscule flakes on the front at 4 and 5 o’clock. (#4860)
