Series tiles are ones that were part of a larger set of tiles. They, of course, include the brilliant English tile makers and designers of the Victorian era. Also included are series done by AET & Mosaic from the 1930's on, as well as the many Astrological sets created throughout the tile ages.

Aesthetic Movement Tile with Fox This is a wonderful Aesthetic Movement transferware tile. There are two related scenes in the design on this tile. The upper circle shows a fox that is prowling the edge of a body of water. The lower circle has an adult pheasant and 3 baby pheasants. Transfer printed in dark brown on cream. Measures 6" square. Circa 1890. This tile is either a product by Minton Hollins (England) or ITT (International Tile & Trim Co.) Brooklyn, NY. In nice condition. The bottom left edge has a chip – and there is minor edge roughness. This would look excellent in frame. (#1614)

Aesthetic Movement Tile with Dog This is a wonderful Aesthetic Movement transferware tile. There are two related scenes in the design on this tile. The upper circle shows two ducks flying over a marsh. The lower circle has a retriever dog with a duck in its mouth. Transfer printed in dark brown on cream. The tile is 6" square. Circa 1890. This tile is either a product by Minton Hollins (England) or ITT (International Tile & Trim Co.) Brooklyn, NY. In very nice condition, with only minor edge roughness. (#1609)

Water Bird Tile made by Richard E Bishop This outstanding tile was made by Richard E. Bishop. It depicts a bird in flight, on a light turquoise background. Raised line technique, combination of matte and semi matte glazes. Measures 6" square by 5/8" thick. This could be depicting a snipe or a bog sprite. It has a long black beak, a rusty brown body and brown and blue-gray wings. Impressed Richard E. Bishop on the back. In excellent condition. (#1864)

Richard Evett Bishop (1887-1975) – has a varied and well recognized career in art. He created the 1936 Federal Duck Stamp - and is particularly well know for his works depicting game birds and water fowl. Google his name for a full bio.

Duck Tile made by Richard E Bishop This outstanding tile was made by Richard E. Bishop. It depicts a duck in flight, on a light turquoise background. Raised line technique, combination of matte and semi matte glazes. The duck is done in glazes of blue-gray, pale gray, white, black, brown and has a blue beak. Measures 6" square by 5/8" thick. Impressed Richard E. Bishop on the back. Tiny glaze flake on upper right edge and bottom left edge. In excellent condition. (#1865)

1915 Wedgwood Calendar Tile Boston Custom House #2 Made in 1915, by Wedgwood, England, this is a calendar tile for the year of 1915. Done in dark brown transfer. The scene is of Boston Custom House - Massachusetts. This is the variant of the scene with "more smoke". It also says "28 Stories - 495 feet high". Two original mounting holes. Measures 4 3/4" x 3 3/8". Nips around edges - generally very nice condition. The calendar side says "Jones McDuffee & Stratton Crockery China & Glass Merchants, 33 Franklin St. Boston USA. (#T-2028)

Vintage Whimsical Horse Tile by Mosaic Tile Company This vintage tile was made by the Mosaic Tile Company of Zanesville, Ohio, circa 1956. It depicts an adorable horse or pony, who is prancing next to a wooden fence. Done in the wax resist technique, this has lovely muted shades of tan, green, brown blue in semi matte glazes. The tile measures 4 1/4" square by itself. It is nicely mounted in a handmade solid cherry wood frame, which measures 8 3/8" square and is 3/4" thick. The tile has an original paper label on the back from the Mosaic factory. It is design #4328, and was made on January 18, 1956. The tile is in excellent condition, and the frame is beautiful and ready to hang. We have another tile in this series – type T1150-F into the search box. (#T1150-E)

Wedgwood Ivanhoe Plate Friar Tuck & Black Knight This antique Wedgwood blue transferware plate is titled Friar Tuck Entertains the Black Knight. The scene shows the Friar standing and talking to the Black Knight, while the knight eats from a bowl. Standing next to the table are two dogs. The design around the edge has portraits of Coeur de Lion, Rebecca, Isaac of York, Lady Rowenna, and others along with running hares, pheasants, chickens, grouse, fish and flowers. A masterful design! Measures 10" in diameter. Circa 1890. This is in excellent condition. (There was also a lovely set of transferware tiles created with these Ivanhoe scenes.) (#T-1201)

Bob Cratchit Tile - Packard & Ord Nice vintage tile depicting Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim, from the novel "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens. This dust pressed tile was hand painted, underglaze by the firm of Packard & Ord (England), circa 1950's, and has the OR monogram to the right of his left foot. This is done on a Thynne. Originally came from the tile collection of Chris Blanchett. Measures 4" square. In very nice condition. (#1408)

The scene is of The State House in Boston, Massachusetts. It also says "dedicated July 4 1795". One original mounting hole. The front scene has a small chip on the "T" in "The", and there is minor corner roughness and nips and slight edge nips. American Encaustic Tile Dutch Women Carrying a Bucket This is another lovely tile in the Dutch scenic series made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company, of Zanesville, Ohio, circa 1930-1940. This depicts a Dutch woman carrying a pail and walking towards water. Bright white sky background. There's a windmill in the background. This vintage tile measures 4 1/4" square – small chip to bottom right corner. There's an entire series of tiles, featuring sweet and childlike Dutch scenes that were made by American Encaustic, Franklin and American Olean tile companies. These are wonderful for a child's bathroom or framed and hung in a nursery or bedroom. We have many tiles in this series. Also see item numbers: 1483, 1482, 1109, 1110, 1161, 1162, 1163 (#1113)

Mintons Series Tile – Blue White Figural Series Great tile made by Mintons China Works, England circa 1880. Depicts a soldier carrying a sword, talking to a woman at a door. Another man hides inside the door listening to the conversation. Kinds of looks like a scene from the Spanish Inquisition? I am sure that this belongs to a "series" - but cannot identify which one. Done in dark blue transfer on a white background. Measures 6" square. Minor edge wear and nicks – tight, hard to see hairline on the right side. (#1822)
