Series Tiles

Series tiles are ones that were part of a larger set of tiles. They, of course, include the brilliant English tile makers and designers of the Victorian era. Also included are series done by AET & Mosaic from the 1930's on, as well as the many Astrological sets created throughout the tile ages.

Copeland Temple of Diana Tile The tile scene depicts "The Great Temple of Diana At Ephesus". Measuring 6 1/4" in diameter, this is transfer printed in a blue/green color on a creamy white ground - nice transfer design on the edge as well. Made by WT Copeland, England, ca 1900. Two inkstamps and two impressed marks on the back. In very nice condition.

American Encaustic Tile with Two Boys This tile has a scene with a young Dutch boy hurrying to keep up with an older boy. Done in a combination of semi matte and high glazes, measuring 4 1/4" square. An attractive tile made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company, Zanesville, Ohio, circa 1940. In excellent condition. (#1482)

Bill Sykes Tile - Packard & Ord Nice vintage tile depicting Bill Sykes and his dog, from the novel "Oliver Twist" by Charles Dickens. This dust pressed tile was hand painted, underglaze by the firm of Packard & Ord (England), circa 1950's, and has the OR monogram to the right of the dog. This is done on a Thynne. Rare Copeland Plate with Robin Hood Scene This antique blue and white transferware luncheon plate dates between 1894 - 1910, and was made by WT Copeland & Sons. It measures 9 1/4" in diameter, and has a scalloped edge with a white gadrooned rim. The series is "Incidents from the Legend of Robin Hood" , and the scene is "Little John Decoys Sheriff". A series of tiles was also done in this pattern (without the border). One miniscule glaze nip on the backside of the rim - generally in outstanding condition. (#T-1470)

Franklin Pottery Vintage Pink Silhouette Tile Silhouette items were popular in the 1930's, and Franklin Pottery, of Landsale, Pennsylvania capitalized on this theme by creating these designs in tile. Measuring 4 1/4" square, the design shows a Colonial man in front of a bench, tipping his hat. The background is semi matte glaze cream color and the design and self framing edge are done in a pink. In excellent condition. (#1465)

Watteau Subjects Antique Tile - Man Woman and Dog This is a great, hard to find series, done by Mintons China Works (England). Dating from circa 1870, this is a scene of a man sitting on a tree trunk, with a woman looking down at him, and a dog in the foreground, done in brown on buff transfer printing. Measures 6' square - one tiny nip on the righ edge - generally in excellent condition. (#1044)

Man That Pleased None Aesop's Fables Tile This tile is based on the Aesop's Fables tale of "The Man That Pleased None". Made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company, Zanesville, Ohio, this tile design was originally created by Walter Crane in England. Polychrome transfer printed design in marvelous colors. Molded feet on the tile / trivet. One shallow glaze nip in the lower right corner. Circa 1930, this 6" square tile is in generally very nice condition. (#1033)

Moyr Smith Industrial Series Plate - Mason John Moyr Smith designed a series of tiles for Mintons China Works around 1870, called the Industrial Series (aka The Trades). There were 12 tiles in the series - which are sometimes hard to find. This early series was also adapted to desert dishes in brown on white transfer. This plate is "The Mason". Measuring 8 1/2" in diameter. It has 3 minor rim chips and light discoloration to the back of the dish. Generally, it is in very good overall condition. We also have 2 other plates in this series. Antique Tile of a Ram by Wedgwood This light blue transfer printed tile is from a series titled Fresco Heads made by Wedgwood in England, circa 1880. Measures 6" square and depicts a horned ram. One of the nice colors in this series and a hard to find tile. Tight hairline in the middle of the right side. - and minor edge wear. (#1711)

Doubleday Centennial Commemorative Tile – Mintons This is a fabulous and unusual trivet tile commemorating the 100th anniversary of an establishment called Doubleday – from 1789 – 1889. Made by Mintons China Works, England – this is 6 5/8" in diameter and is transfer printed brown on cream. The scene is a central store on a street – showing the stacks of books in the windows. There’s a carriage and 2 horses in front of the store and 2 people stand off to the side. In outstanding condition. (#T-1819)

Horse and Rider Antique Tile by Minton Hollins Bright blue majolica glaze on the intricately molded antique tile by Minton Hollins & Company, circa 1880, England. Measures just under 8" square. Shows a scene of a rider falling off a horse that has just crashed through a fence. The left edge (not the top though) has some old chipping along it - the glaze surface is outstanding. (#T-1073)
