5867

Plymouth Rock Paperweight This is the largest (4 1/8" long) of 3 paperweights made c. 1876 to commemorate the landing of our Pilgrim Fathers. Maker unknown. This paperweight appears to have been dropped and rolled on the floor (sad, sad) as there are 3 surface bruises as well as a ¼" long surface flake between the bruises and above the "0". If you are still reading this, the most amazing thing about this piece is the 3 lines of text on the beveled bottom which say; "A rock in the wilderness welcomed our sires from bondage far over the dark rolling sea. On that holy altar they kindled the fires, Jehovah! Which glow in our bosoms for thee. Mary Chilton was the first to land upon the Rock, Dec. 21. 1620. In attempting to raise up the rock in 1775 it was split asunder. This is a fac-simile of the upper part. Inkstand Co. Prov. RI Pilgrim Rock Trademark 1876." There are 3 rows of inscriptions, 2 on the flat bottom surface and one on the tiny beveled edge above the bottom surface. (5867)
