Click for more detail...
5451
Liberty Bell Match Holder - Centennial Glass The Liberty Bell pattern was produced by Gillinder & Sons for the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial. This is an undocumented piece of the pattern. It may be a hanging match holder. Note that the wrought iron hanger can be removed and the glass base has protrusions on either side of the rim. There are cut outs on the hangar for the protrusions, and you can fit the hangar so that it "catches" against the protrusions. The neck of the rim is not threaded. One side reads "Proclaim Liberty Throughout the Land" and below that "1876". Near the bottom of the other side it reads "1776." The piece measures 2 ½" d across the base and 2 ¼" h to the top of the opening. There may have been another piece (I know not what) of this, as looking down into the top it looks "unfinished" which is unlike Gillinder products. There is some rust on the wrought iron hangar. The glass is in excellent condition. (#5451)

PH08
Liberty Bell Bank This clear glass bank, with original slotted tin lid, measures 3 5/8" in height and 3 1/2" across the base. There is a shallow 1/4" chip at the top of the molded glass threading.

In an effort to squeeze as many words as possible on this bank, the maker's wrote "LEV. XXVXX". Also on the bank "Proclaim liberty throughout the land to all the inhabitants thereof". Just below that is "By order of the Assembly of the Province of PENNA. for the Statehouse in the Philada". The words "Pass and Stow" appear near the molded crack - under that "Philad. a" and under that "MDCCLIII". On the base are the words "Design patent pending" - in the center of the base there are two number "184" and "7". Probably circa 1876.
