This exquisite piece of Wheatley is very early, and unlike much of the later wares. To find hand incised and dated pieces of this important pottery is not common. This large plate measures 11" in diameter. The technique of decoration on this is called barbotine, and was difficult and time consuming. The plate has a deceptively simple design of two lily stalks. Hand incised on the back "T J W & Co" and "1880". This plate is one of Thomas J Wheatley's earliest pieces, as the company was established in 1880, in Cincinnati, Ohio. This is in superb condition.
