Captain Robert Treat was the Governor of Connecticut, and is considered to be the founder of the city of Newark, New Jersey. In 1916, the city of Newark was 250 years old, and a great celebration took place. The Mosaic Tile Company was obviously commissioned to produce a tile in honor of this occasion. This hexagonal tile measures 3 1/2" from point to point, and a profile of the Captain is done in high relief on the tile's surface. The back is dated and heavily marked! This tile was also part of Mr. Sigafoose's tile collection. There is one minor shallow chip on the back - the tile is in generally excellent condition. (#T-1183)
