The company, Ritchie & Dyer, was formed in 1879 in Hamilton, Ohio. They were manufacturers of saw mills and traction road engines (aka the steam traction engine). This small and wonderfully crafted tile was made by the Hamilton Tile Works for Ritchie & Dyer - both of Hamilton, Ohio, around 1880.
Done in a goldish green majolica glaze, the horse and rider have nice molded relief. The words " Ironhorse Road Engine " are above the rider, while the words " Ritchie & Dyer Hamilton O " are underneath the horse. This measures 3" square and is in pristine condition. This is an important piece of tile and industrial age history. (BxStove050)
