Minerva was made by the Boston & Sandwich Glass Co., c. 1870. The Bates plate is one of the more difficult pieces to find in the Minerva pattern. John Coulter Bates served in Lincoln’s cabinet, also in the Spanish American War as a Major-General. 7 ¾" d. without tab handles. There are 3 smudged areas of wear in the clear center, one to the left and 2 to the right of the bust portrait – the largest is ½" long. There is a 3/8" long under edge rim chip at the top edge of the plate. (5472)
