1079

Old Metal Curly Wire Whisk Spoon-shaped A neat antique whisk, in the shape of a spoon but fully "open" and made of heavy metal twisted wire. Has 6 curly wires in the spoon oval portion which do the "whisking" and a three strand wire handle, with the middle strand made of two wires twisted together. A great vintage look which would be a neat decoration in a kitchen hanging on a wall.

Measures about 10 1/2 inches in length, 3 inches greatest width. Excellent old condition, with no apparent breaks, bends, pieces missing as far as we can tell. We've done only a surface wiping and are selling it as is/as found. The metal has the dark gray aged color, with wear, rust and dirt spotting, etc., but nothing really objectionable -- it looks old and used like one would expect.

A nice addition to any collection of wire whisks or a general collection of kitchen collectibles, kitchen gadgets or kitchen utensils.

Click for more detail...
1231

Griswold #1 450 Cast Metal Meat Sausage Food Grinder A neat antique cast metal food grinder or meat grinder or sausage grinder made by Griswold Manufacturing Company of Erie, Pennsylvania (PA, Penn., Penna.), and marked with the full manufacturer name ("The Griswold Mfg. Co., Erie, PA.") on the outside of the handle and "Griswold" on one side of the main body of the grinder under a Red Cross type plus sign. They apparently made these in varied types or sizes, with this one marked "No. 1" (#1, number 1, No 1) on the upper grinder spout on the opposite side from where it says "Griswold". There is also the number 450 on the lower body of the piece on the same side as the No. 1, the number 2458 on the upper inside of the handle, and the number 451 on the outside of the circular end from which ground food exits.

When fully assembled, this piece measures roughly 9 1/2 inches long from the top of the input grinding spout to roughly the bottomside of the nicely turned old wood handle (we are not measuring to the bottom of the screw turn which attaches this onto a table since this, with turning, can be longer or shorter), about 8 1/8 inches in width from the outer end of the handle to about the outside of the three knobs on the outer end of where the food being ground exits, and about 3 1/2 inches in depth for the outer diameter of the circular end where the food being ground exits. This piece is obviously made of some cast metal, but we don't know which type (steel?, it doesn't look like cast iron to us from the coloring). We have provided 8 images showing from different sides and close-ups of some of the markings. One image shows the piece disassembled so that you can see the interior screw/turning/grinding piece as well as the 3 interior plates (two round metal pieces with holes in them and one windmill arm type piece with knife edges).

This kitchen collectible or kitchen gadget overall is what we would call a medium gray silver color, with darker mottling or spotting as one would expect from use or age...nothing bad but an overall somewhat evenly spotted effect. We don't know if it looked "shiny and new" when made or always had this metal spotted effect. We have not done any cleaning on this piece and are selling it as is/as found (but it is not dirty at all). The lighting from the camera causes white "hot spots" in the images and makes the piece look a shiny, lighter, newer silver color than it does in person. The wood handle is a nice old wood coloring with a mixture of dark and light to it, with a touch of use wear or scarring, but no cracks, chips or anything bad at all. As you may be able to see in the disassembled image, there is some orange rust on the interior pieces, nothing really bad but some is there.

We judge this to be in excellent overall used condition, nothing really wrong but certainly not "mint" looking, having the old used look which we find desirable and expected in antique and vintage kitchen utensils and kitchen collectibles. Beyond what is said above, there are no major use flaws to the piece in terms of large cracks, chips, etc. The edge of the flat part which sits on the topside of a table when attached looks uneven, not a straight line, with likely some wear to the edge but no major chips. There is expected use wear to the metal surfaces with some scarring, scratches, rubbed wear, etc., but nothing bad at all. On the tip of the handle where there is a round metal piece there is a small triangular chip in this metal piece end.

This piece is in great shape and what we would hope/expect to find in one of these wonderful old used Griswold kitchen items. It would make a great addition to any kitchen collectibles grouping or a specific collection of Griswold kitchen pieces, and look nifty on display hooked/screwed onto an old wood table.

Please note that this is a very heavy metal piece which will effect shipping weight and postage costs. By itself without packing, this piece weighs over 4 pounds.

1253

Antique Wood Handle Food Chopper with Rectangular Blade This is an older, better primitive Wood Handle Chopper with a Rectangular Blade. While we don't know the exact age, this appears to be a more primitive, older piece. The wood handle is older, turned in a way that curves in slightly before the outer edges, with several vertical lines for décor/gripping. But most importantly, the metal for the blade is all one piece and extends through the handle to a visible rough rounded end at the top of the handle which suggests hand forging although weI can't guarantee that...it certainly is of the older modes of making these pieces, though. There is much wear suggesting age via discoloration, spotting and rusting on the blade, wear/chipping/spotting on the handle (including some white spots which suggest paint transfer from something else), etc. There is a rough chip on the topside of the handle where the metal comes through with a piece of wood slightly sticking up here. On the ends of the handle, on one side there is a small indented rough circle, with the other end showing some lines/cracking at the center...we don't know if this is from how the handle was inserted onto the blade, use wear or what. Note that you can see in the images that the wood handle is not "straight" on the piece...it is solidly on the metal but tilted, either by design or from use, we don't know which. A really nifty primitive piece.

Click for more detail...
1080

Early Handmade Hammered Iron Cooking Fork An antique metal (probably iron or wrought iron, but we're not familiar with these things) cooking or serving fork, which looks to be handmade (hand made) and repeatedly "hammered" while being made. We don't think this is cast metal or cast iron, as we believe that wouldn't be handmade. Looks to us like a piece a blacksmith would have made from the style and irregularities or unevenness (does not have the perfectly aligned shape and evenness one expects from pieces made in a manufacturing plant). Our guess is that this is a truly old and early piece -- we can't guarantee that, but it looks like that to us and came from a home with other very old items. The surface is bumpy throughout, not smooth, with variations in thickness and looks in spots like some of the top layer of metal may have come off (but it's fully more metal underneath of the same type).

Measures 13 1/2 inches in length, 2 3/16 inches greatest width. Top of handle is the thinnest portion, with a central oval hole to permit easy hanging by a stove or fire. Fork head has two tines which are slightly misshapen, with varying thickness and indication of pieces missing from years of use (near the end of one tine it has a "cinched" in part due to the wear, with the other tine shows unevenness to the edge from pieces worn away). We've tried to show this in varied images; please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflection from the camera.

Terrific old used condition as described above. Overall dark gray metal color with a light orange rusting mixed into the color throughout (more noticeable on the tines). But it is the unevenness and the wear which makes it believable that this is a really old cooking fork, with all of this adding to the great look of the piece and none of it objectionable.

A neat addition to any collection of antique cooking implements, kitchen collectibles, kitchen utensils or kitchen gadgets.

Click for more detail...
1252

Old Wood Handle Food Chopper with Rounded Blade The pictures pretty much show it all. This is an old piece but we don't know the exact age. It measures about 8 inches in width x 5 1/2 inches in height. The piece is fully attached, but when you shake it the blade rattles slightly, so it is not absolutely tight. It has expected wear and darkening, but is in really nice old shape. The wear/aging/use includes on the wood handle some small chipping, scrapping and scarring, and on the metal chopper there is spotting, small rust spots, dark tarnished spots, scraping/use lines/scarring as to be expected from an antique or vintage piece used over the years.
