1253

Antique Kitchen Wood Handle Food Chopper with Rectangular Blade This is an older, better primitive Wood Handle Chopper with a Rectangular Blade. While we don't know the exact age, this appears to be a more primitive, older piece. The wood handle is older, turned in a way that curves in slightly before the outer edges, with several vertical lines for décor/gripping. But most importantly, the metal for the blade is all one piece and extends through the handle to a visible rough rounded end at the top of the handle which suggests hand forging although weI can't guarantee that...it certainly is of the older modes of making these pieces, though. There is much wear suggesting age via discoloration, spotting and rusting on the blade, wear/chipping/spotting on the handle (including some white spots which suggest paint transfer from something else), etc. There is a rough chip on the topside of the handle where the metal comes through with a piece of wood slightly sticking up here. On the ends of the handle, on one side there is a small indented rough circle, with the other end showing some lines/cracking at the center...we don't know if this is from how the handle was inserted onto the blade, use wear or what. Note that you can see in the images that the wood handle is not "straight" on the piece...it is solidly on the metal but tilted, either by design or from use, we don't know which. A really nifty primitive piece.

1349

Wood Handle Strainer, Kitchen Utensil Cooking Baking Collectible This is an antique or vintage wood handled stainer. While there is no manufacturer name or direct indication of age, we are guessing this piece dates to the 1920s-1940s period. The wood handle has a black end with a hole through it for ease in hanging, then a white stripe followed by a natural light wood colored varnished area, although much of this varnish/coloring has peeled away (and is still peeling up) showing the raw wood underneath. The handle is capped by a metal cap prior to the metal strainer portion which has an open metal diamond shape below the strainer and two elongated diamond shaped "ears" above the strainer (also possibly for ease in hanging from that end).

Full piece measures about 8 1/2 inches long x 2 3/4 inches wide (width of strainer opening), and sits about 2 1/8 inches in height when laying on a table, to the upper end of the cone-shaped strainer.

In old, vintage, used condition, but with a great overall look. The handle, in addition to peeling noted above, has other evidence of wear including a small round elongated worn/chipped spot (3/16 inch wide) on the black end, crazing throughout the varnish and white stripe, other spots/dirt/discoloration/use wear throughout. The metal portions have the expected worn/tarnished look and feel with dark spotting. The strainer part is in very nice used shape, with no holes or tears but overall wear, spots of dirt/discoloration, etc. There is a rounded bumpiness to the cone shape of the strainer as to be expected from things sitting in the strainer while the water dripped out from use.

A nice used piece "with charatcter".

1354

Vintage Wood Honey Dip Dipper Server Nice old wood honey dip or honey dipper or honey server. This is a vintage piece, not new, from the overall look and darkening of the wood. It came out of an older person's home along with other old kitchen items, utensils and gadgets.

This appears to have been made in three pieces that were then fitted or glued together (although no evidence of glue is seen). One piece of wood was nicely turned with deep grooves for the spiral dipping part. This was fitted onto a wood rod, with a rounded wood cap piece fitted on the bottom end. The dipper measures about 6 inches in length, about 1 inch in width and sits 1 inch high laying on a table (and it rolls easily on the table).

Very nice old condition, with no major chips, cracks, or large flaws. There is evidence of age and use wear as expected via some very very tiny chipping on the ends of the spiral grooves and the upper end of the bottom cap piece, some darkening/dark spotting on the end cap and the outside of the spirals, other general scraping/scarring/use wear and a largely all over dull white (not bright) spotting and other scarring on the upper outer top end of the spiral part. In the middle of the bar handle it looks like someone carved their initials into the wood by hand; these could be "RND".

A nice vintage wood piece to add to a kitchen utensil collection or to display in an old jar on a coutertop with other kitchen gadgets.

Click for more detail...
1080

Early Handmade Hammered Iron Fork, Cooking Serving Carving An antique metal (probably iron or wrought iron, but we're not familiar with these things) cooking, serving or carving fork, which looks to be handmade (hand made) and repeatedly "hammered" while being made. We don't think this is cast metal or cast iron, as we believe that wouldn't be handmade. Looks to us like a piece a blacksmith would have made from the style and irregularities or unevenness (does not have the perfectly aligned shape and evenness one expects from pieces made in a manufacturing plant). Our guess is that this is a truly old and early piece -- we can't guarantee that, but it looks like that to us and came from a home with other very old items. The surface is bumpy throughout, not smooth, with variations in thickness and looks in spots like some of the top layer of metal may have come off (but it's fully more metal underneath of the same type).

Measures 13 1/2 inches in length, 2 3/16 inches greatest width. Top of handle is the thinnest portion, with a central oval hole to permit easy hanging by a stove or fire. Fork head has two tines which are slightly misshapen, with varying thickness and indication of pieces missing from years of use (near the end of one tine it has a "cinched" in part due to the wear, with the other tine shows unevenness to the edge from pieces worn away). We've tried to show this in varied images; please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflection from the camera.

Terrific old used condition as described above. Overall dark gray metal color with a light orange rusting mixed into the color throughout (more noticeable on the tines). But it is the unevenness and the wear which makes it believable that this is a really old cooking fork, with all of this adding to the great look of the piece and none of it objectionable.

A neat addition to any collection of antique cooking implements, kitchen collectibles, kitchen utensils or kitchen gadgets.
