1009

1898 USS Maine Funeral & Court of Inquiry Prints, Spanish American War Original book page which appears to have a photo on each side, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique 1898 issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page. On one side it's a photo of the "Funeral of the Victims of the 'Maine' Disaster" (USS Maine, U.S.S. Maine). On the other side is a photo of "The Court of Inquiry in Session" after the destruction of the Second-Class Battleship Maine (please note that there are other photos from the USS Maine in items #1010, 1011, 1012 and 1207).

There is a paragraph under each photo providing much information and a detailed description. The funeral picture shows horse drawn carriages conveying the bodies of some of the 200 men killed in the U.S.S. Maine attack. This particular view shows "the funeral cortege entering the Prado from Obispo street, on its way to Christopher Colon Cemetery" in Havana, Cuba, where most of the bodies were buried.

As detailed under the Court Of Inquiry photo, "Within a few days after the destruction of the 'Maine' the government (of the U.S.) proceeded to institute an official inquiry in the cause of the disaster". It further states that this view "shows the full Board in session, on the lighthouse tender 'Mangrove,' examining Ensign Powelson, whose evidence was of the most important character upon which the conclusions of the Board were largely based." The paragraph mentions the naval officers chosen to compose the board, who therefore are shown here: "Captain William T. Sampson, of the 'Iowa,' President; Captain F. E. Chadwick, of the cruiser 'New York;' Lieutenant-Commander William R. Potter, executive officer of the 'New York,' and Lieutenant-Commander Adolph Marix, executive officer of the training ship 'Vermont,' the latter acting as judge advocate."

The book covers of the original book were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. That is why, while there are no dates on these pages themselves, we can guarantee the age. Overall, this book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine").

Excellent condition black & white photograph or picture, on full page measuring about 13 inches x 10 3/4 inches. No major tears, bending, or yellowing. There is very very minor page edge wear (corner creasing, other edge handling wear) and expected overall handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book, and slight browning at the edges of the pages from age. All of this is very, very minor, and we judge that all would not be noticeable framed. As visible in the images of each page, you will see that the photos and their paragraphs, while "level" with each other, and not level horizontally on the pages -- they tilt slightly. This certainly could be compensated for when matted and framed.

A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, the U.S.S. Maine, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.

1025

1898 Spanish American War Naval Ship Print, USS Holland Torpedo Boat Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page; on the two sides of this page are stern and bow views of the Holland Submarine Torpedo Boat.

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). No copyright dates appear on the book pages. There are two different paragraphs describing the ship under the two pictures.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No major bending, or yellowing. There is a large corner tear in one corner, but it is entirely in the margin area and could be covered with a matte when framing. There is other very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). There is what looks like "print rubbing", print transfer or spotting in the white margin areas which we believe was done in manufacture, as well as some incomplete printing in some of the words in the paragraph on the "bow" side and white faint vertical lines & dots on the photograph (must have been a poor quality photo to start with). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book.

The book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.

1206

1898 Naval Ship Print, USS Cincinnati; USS Detroit; Gun Photos Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain" published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with antique prints on each side of the page; on one side there are two prints of ships, the Protected Cruiser Cincinnati (copy states that this ship was commanded by Captain Colby M. Chester) and the Unprotected Cruiser Detroit (copy states that this ship was commanded by James H. Dayton). On the other side there are two prints of guns, "Practice with a rapid-fire gun" showing gunners of the protected cruiser Atlanta at target practice with a one-pound rapid-fire machine gun; and "Drilling with a Gatling gun" showing a pratice drill on the wooden school-ship Enterprise with a gang of cadets at exercise with a Gatling gun.

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). There is a paragraph describing the ships or the weapons underneath the bottom photo on each page.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. There are some defined curved creases within the page in the pictures of the Cincinnati and the Gatling Gun (they're on opposite sides) that may have been made in manufacture from their ragged style (or something was rubbed on the page) and result in white dotting or light lines on the pictures (not really bad, but there). There is other very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). There is a touch of browning towards the page edges (nothing bad).

1010

1898 USS Maine Ward Room & Junior Officers Prints, Spanish Am War Original book page which appears to have a photo on each side, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique 1898 issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page. On one side it's a photo of the Ward-room of the Second-Class Battleship Maine (USS Maine, U.S.S. Maine). In the paragraph beneath the photo it states that the ward room is an apartment used by all commissioned officers except the captain, with this view taken "some months" before the ship's destruction. It further states that one of the two officers who lost their lives on the Maine (among the 200 who died) appears in the picture, Engineer Merritt (but it doesn't point out which gentleman he is). On the other side of the page is a photo of "A Group of Junior Officers of the 'Maine'", also referred to as petty officers (please note that there are other photos from the USS Maine in items #1009, 1011, 1012 and 1207).

The book covers of the original book were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. Overall, this book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!").

Excellent condition black & white photographs or pictures, on full page measuring about 13 inches x 10 3/4 inches. No major tears, bending, or yellowing. There is very minor page edge wear (corner bending, other edge handling wear, all very minor), some stray dots and expected overall handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book, the most prominent small crease occurs in the white margin area). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book, and slight browning at the edges of the pages from age. We would consider all of this minor, and we judge that most or all of this would not be noticeable framed.

A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, the U.S.S. Maine, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.

Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page; on one side it's the launching of the two ships Kentucky and Kearsarge, with the other a view of the Kearsarge afloat.

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). While no dates appear on the book pages, below the picture of the Kentucky and Kearsarge it states, "Copyrighted 1898, by William H. Rau. There is a paragraph describing the ships under the pictures.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No tears, major bending, or yellowing. 1898 Print, USS Rogers Torpedo Boat; Fort Mifflin on the Delaware Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page; on one side it's the Torpedo Boat Rogers, with the other a view of Fort Mifflin on the Delaware near Philadelphia, PA (Pennsylvania, Penn., Penna.).

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). No copyright dates appear on the book pages. There is a paragraph describing the ship and the fort under their pictures. With Fort Mifflin the paragraph talks about the history of this and nearby forts, and mentions that it is now a naval magazine.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. There is a large crease on one side that extends from the margin area slightly into the photo; it is a sharp crease that could be a tear if it was any sharper. Otherwise there aren't any unexpected flaws. There is a little age darkening towards the page edges, some very minor page or corner edge wear, and expected handling wear for a book page (the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). Not a reproduction, but page from an antique 1898 issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page.

In the paragraph beneath the photo it describes what the gunners do relative "firing of ordnance", taking charge of artillery and powder magazines, inspectiing the musketry, etc. It states that this view was taken a few months before the ship's destruction, and that among the 266 men who were killed were nearly all those who appear in the photograph. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique 1898 issue of this book (we guarantee this), with antique photos or prints on each side of the page. On the other side is a photo of "Target Practice with Heavy Ordnance" which appears not to have been taken on the Maine. As described in the paragraph under this picture, this photo shows "gunners handling a 6-inch rapid-fire breech-loading rifle, which is placed in a barbette on the gun deck of one of our protected cruisers".

For the photos shot on the Maine, the top one is labelled "A Minstrel Show on the 'Maine'". This photo shows people in costume "giving a minstrel entertainment", and you can see that at least two of the people are in "blackface" (black face) or have blackened their faces with makeup. The photo beneath this shows the "Ship's Company of the 'Maine'", showing "a large number of the petty officers and sailors" of the ship "while she was lying at the Brooklyn Navy Yard".

Maine, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc. May also be of interest to those collecting pieces relating to Black Americana and minstrel shows, or those interested in war guns, navy guns and rifles, ship guns and artillery, etc.

1017

1898 Spanish Navy Ship Prints, Pelayo, Almirante Oquendo Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page. On these two pages the book showed two ships in the Spanish Navy or Spanish Armada, comparing them to U.S. Navy ships or vessels. On one side it's the First Class Battleship Pelayo, with the other showing the Armored Cruiser Almirante Oquendo.

The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy or Spanish Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). No copyright dates appear on the book pages. There is a paragraph describing each ship under the pictures, with comparisons to U.S. ships.

Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No tears, major bending, or yellowing. There is very minor page edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book.

The book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, or a collection relating in general to Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.
