Nifty Vintage Handmade Cloth Doll 1920's Boy?
An impressive antique handmade (hand made) cloth doll, which from the look, style and manner of doing the eyes we would guess was made in the 1920's. We are not doll experts, but this also seems to be the right age based on what we were told. It came from the home of an elderly lady whose aunt had made this for her as a child.
Measures about 18 inches in length, 5 1/2 inches in width at the legs, about 7 1/2 inches in width at the arms and hands based on how these lay (no hands are defined on the piece, we are referring to the end part of the arms), about 4 1/2 inches in width at the head. It is an older thin, flat-type doll, measuring only about 2 1/2 inches in depth. It is hand stitched, using a thicker-type black yarn (we think) in lines for the hair, round outline to the face and for outlining the facial features. We are particularly taken with how the eyes are done, in a circular, sideways comma-like fashion, which is part of what we think dates it. There is black fabric or trim and buttons (2 types) sewn on for clothing detail, augmenting the red & beige polka dot simple body or suit. We are not sure if this is a boy or girl doll, but would guess a boy from the outfit.
As this is a vintage piece, it has the expected 'loved' worn look, it in no way looks new or mint. It looks somewhat dirty to us, with definite spots of light brown soiling on it; these might wash off but we did not try to clean it and are selling it as is, as found. This includes some light soiling on the face. There are two worn or small ripped spots on the fabric on the front side of the two 'hips', and it is obvious that it has been repaired several times particularly along the side seams (under the arms, on the front above the legs and between the legs) with white and red threads. On the back side it is repaired along the back of one arm where it meets the body and the stuffing in this arm feels thin/missing along half of it, probably lost in a rip from playing before it was repaired.
But for us, these all add to the character of the piece and the believability as to it's age, making it a terrific find. A great addition to any old doll collection.
