Patent Date Pin Pencil Holder Chatelaine Type
Neat, simple usable pin which was worn at turn of last century to likely help keep track of a pencil, scissors or something else. Back of pin provides patent dates & maker, 'Ketcham & McDougall, New York, Pat Feb 24 '03, Apr 26 10'. Simple circle pin about 1 in. diameter with fully retractable chain inside which stretches to 18 1/2 in. in length with closed wire loop on end to which one could attach pencil, etc. Uncertain of metal pin is made of, no marking as to metal type, believe likely silver plate which has developed dark patina over years (we did not attempt to shine but left as found), visible 'tabs' on back for connecting front metal to back. Old style open pin clasp on back. Chain pulls out & usually retracts quickly, once in a while 'catching' (not retracting first time) but will then retract once you pull again. Wonderful condition. There's some wear to top side and possible scratch near edge, but that may also be part of patina. A neat chatelaine type piece.
Manufacturer: Ketcham & McDougall, New York
