1045
Antique Stevenson and Kefauver President Pin Pinback Antique political pin or pinback used in the Presidential campaign to elect Adlai Stevenson with Kefauver as his Vice President. All American colors of red, white and blue, with the words "Stevenson and Kefauver". We have provided two images, one with a dime for size, please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflection from the camera.

Small vintage round pin measuring about 13/16ths of an inch in diameter, with pointed pin sticking out a bit further. The pin face seems to stick up in the air a bit from the pin itself, as if the pin might have been bent outward a bit from being worn. The silver-coloring inside back of the pin has repetitive blue printing on it of the numbers 634 and 313 and 3 different insignias, of "I.P.E.U.", "Union Label" with some numbers indicating the local, and "Allied Printing Trades Council Union Label Chicago, ILL." Around the sides of the pin in three different spots is another I.P.E.U. insignia with 634, the words "Green Duck Co Chicago" which is perhaps the manufacturer, and part of another insignia.

This pin is in pretty nice condition for it's age, but it definitely does show its age. The face of the pin has numerous scratches, rubbed markings, some paint wear and other darkening/worn spots -- it is definitely not new or mint looking, but as one might expect for something which was obviously worn a long time ago. There is some paint wear along the bottom curved edge. The backside interior of the pin actually looks very clean and good, probably from not being exposed to much air/dust since it was obtained pinned onto a banner where it probably sat for many, many years. The pin part itself only has a dot of wear in one spot, but sticks out at an angle slightly as mentioned prior.

Certainly not perfect, but still a nice aged piece, looking as we would expect for one that was probably worn a good bit, which would be a good addition to any collection of presidential campaign memorabilia or as part of a general political collection or one related specifically to Adlai Stevenson or Kefauver.

Click for more detail...
1063
1920s Patterson Political Campaign Pinback Camden NJ #2 Very interesting antique political campaign pinback (pin back) pin which states, "Patterson" on the topside with a red, white and blue striped decor. The backside is blank, just metal, with the usual white paper insert stating the manufacturer of the pin missing. We are concurrently listing another political campaign pin for Patterson (please see our other listing #1). We believe both pins were for the same candidate as they came out of the collection purchased from the same home. The other pin has its white paper insert indicating it was made by The Whitehead & Hoag Co. of Newark, NJ, and we are guessing that that would be the same manufacturer for this pin.

We attempted to do some research into the person on both vintage pins, since nothing but the last name was given. Based on where it was likely produced, the fact that it came out of a home which had a collection of pins & buttons largely from Philadelphia, PA, Camden, and elsewhere in New Jersey, and that the age of other items in the collection included the 1920s, we are guessing that this is an old political campaign pin for Francis Ford Patterson, Jr. during one of his U.S. Congress campaigns to maintain his seat as a member of the House of Representatives from New Jersey's 1st District, whom he served in this capacity from 1920-1927. We certainly can't guarantee that that is who this pin is supporting, but to the best of our ability and research, we believe that is who it is. We wish to give credit to the internet sites politicalgraveyard.com and bioguide.congress.gov from which we ascertained this information and that which follows below. If anyone knows for sure it is him or someone else, please let us know and we'll add that to this listing.

In brief, Mr. Patterson was born in 1867, died in 1935, and lived in at least Newark, Essex County; NJ, Woodbury, NJ; and Camden, NJ. He was associated with the newspaper publishing industry, where he was either employed, connected with, or served as an editor, or owner and publisher of different newspapers (Camden Courier, Philadelphia Record, and Camden Post-Telegram). He also worked in the banking industry (West Jersey Trust Co., West Jersey Title Co., West Jersey Parkside Trust Co.). He was a member of the New Jersey State House of Assembly in 1900, served as County Clerk of Camden County 1900-1920, and elected as a Republican to Congress to fill the vacancy left by William J. Browning when he died, and then re-elected several times.

This small round pin measures about 7/8 inches in diameter, with pointed pin sticking out a bit further. We have provided two images, one including a dime for size comparison. Please note that the white "hot spots" are lighting reflection from the camera. Nice overall old condition, with no major breaks or dents, but it is not mint and shows its age. There are many scratches and a good bit of wear on the topside, with two small dark pin dots (one larger and more pronounced than the other) above the second "t" in Patterson and other white dots, and particular wear to the blue colored portion of the pin. You can see the scratches on the pin surface, particularly in the white area. The metal on the backside of the pin is tarnished and rusted, and the "straight" pin portion is bent. But none of this is unexpected for a piece that likely was worn and ages from the 1920s.

A neat find for someone into collecting political memorabilia or political pins or pinbacks, particularly those from less known or smaller campaigns, or campaigns related to New Jersey, Camden, Congress overall (congressional campaigns), the U.S. House of Representatives, or elected Republican Party officials (political Republicans) in general.
