Antique Henriot Quimper Pottery Small Bowl
This is a small hand painted pottery or ceramic bowl with small handles at the top rim on opposite sides (or tab handles). This type of pottery has been referred to as French Faience or French Majolica or soft paste pottery. On the bottom, this bowl is clearly signed "Henriot Quimper France 117". This is an original antique piece of Quimper pottery, which came out of a home with similar old pieces. We are not experts on Henriot Quimper pieces and will describe this piece as we see it.
The vintage bowl measures 5 1/2 inches at it's greatest width (from outside tip of one handle to the outside tip of other handle), 3 7/8 inches diameter for the round top opening to the bowl, about 1 7/8 inches diameter to the smaller round base to the bowl, and stands 2 inches in height. The outside is plain white with a blue line decoration at the outer rim, and hand painted blue thin leaf decoration on the handles. Inside the bowl is painted a person (we've seen this referred to as a French peasant or Breton), likely a man from the clothing, walking with a cane near plants and leaves, painted in blue, red, green, yellow and black. Near the rim are yellow and blue line decorations. We have provided 7 images to try and show from all angles and sides, as well as a close-up of the mark. Please allow sufficient time for these to load and note that the white "hot spots" are reflections from the camera lighting on the shiny glazed surface. In particular, the painting on the inside of the bowl is very nice, but we couldn't get it to photograph without having white hot spots from the lighting covering some of it.
This piece is in very nice condition, but not mint as you can see in the images. There are no large chips, hairlines or crazing. However, you can see the paint wear or wear flaking on the handle edges and number of minor surface flakes or tiny chips or flea bites on the bowl top rim and near the top rim on the sides. There is also rim line wear on the inner top rim of the bowl. On the interior bowl painting there are some paint chips or paint flakes or wear on the red leaves and pin dots in the painting of the man. While all this is visible, we judge this normal for these kinds of soft paste pieces and pieces of this age, and don't judge this objectionable but see it as normal wear that adds rustic character to the piece. The piece has pottery pin and pit dots and many paint smudges in blue paint, and some uneven or incomplete glazing on the underside of one of the handles.
A nice addition to any collection of this lovely vintage Henriot Quimper pottery and one which would look great on display in a rustic country decor.
